Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Rafiqul Islam was a day laborer. His village is in Feni district. He was born on January 9, 1996, to parents Khurshid Alam and Aleya Begum. He lived in a rented house with his elder sister in Jatrabari. According to eyewitnesses, Rafiqul Islam was shot on July 18 and lay on the street in Jatrabari area. The terrorists of Jubo League disappeared his body. Later, despite searching all hospitals, Rafiqul's body could not be found.
How He Became a Martyr
Sheikh Hasina, to perpetuate her power by appointing her party workers to government jobs, brought back the banned quota system through her own court. Meanwhile, it was learned through newspapers that 2.6 million Indian citizens were illegally working in the country at the will of the Hasina administration. The number of unemployed people who could not get jobs in the country after completing their studies was increasing day by day. Students and the public started protesting peacefully against the unjust quota system from the beginning. Their peaceful protest meetings were attacked by terrorist Chhatra League, who beat students and girls bloody. Later, they attacked the injured in hospitals. In this way, the silent movement for the realization of rights became violent. Students and the public gave one program after another. The autocratic government started arresting, disappearing, and killing students in response to those programs. Students and the public took to the streets with twice the speed. Students from all colleges, universities, and madrasas raised slogans on the streets.
It is worth mentioning that Sheikh Hasina had canceled the quota system in 2018 in the face of student movements. She brought it back in 2024. Also, to cover up her utter failure in her China tour, in response to a journalist during a press meet, she hatefully gave the title of grandchildren of Razakars to the students protesting for their rights. Immediately, students took out processions at night in protest. Slogans arose – Who are you, who am I? Razakar, Razakar! Who said, who said? Autocrat, autocrat! On July 18, students announced a complete shutdown. Rafiqul Islam participated in the movement on July 18. The streets remained turbulent all day. From 7 pm, he could not be found. According to eyewitness accounts, Rafiqul Islam participated in the movement in Kadamtali and Jatrabari areas. At that time, many protesters were shot due to police tear gas, random firing, baton charges, and sniper firing. Rafiqul Islam was also shot. Due to the tense situation, his body could not be collected. Later, the police's ally, Jubo League terrorists, removed some bodies from there, which were never found. His family searched various hospitals. But to this day, they have not found Rafiqul Islam's body.
