Context of Martyrdom
On Friday, July 19, amidst the "complete shutdown" by students protesting for quota reform, widespread clashes, attacks, vandalism, shootings, arson, and loss of life occurred in the capital Dhaka. The capital Dhaka was virtually paralyzed, and the situation was tense. Widespread protests, clashes, and violence also occurred in various districts of the country. At least 44 people were reported killed in shootings and clashes in various areas of the capital. 12 more people were reported killed in various districts of the country. Students, political party leaders and workers, police, journalists, pedestrians, and many others were injured. Alongside students, local people were also seen participating in the movement that day.
Mothers took to the streets with their children. Teachers joined the program with their students. Worshipers joined the revolutionaries after prayers. Mobile networks were shut down across the country. Awami League terrorists blamed the students for setting fire to and vandalizing the Kazipara and Mirpur-10 stations of the metro rail. Although, based on past actions, the people of the country understood that this was the Awami League's own work. Sheikh Hasina, instead of visiting the injured and killed students, shed crocodile tears after seeing the destroyed establishments.
Such actions by the illegal head of state sparked intense hatred everywhere. Taking advantage of all the police being busy on the streets with deadly weapons, 826 prisoners escaped from Narsingdi District Jail by breaking the gate. Weapons were looted. In the evening, a meeting was held at the Awami League President's political office in Dhanmondi with top leaders of the 14-party alliance regarding the ongoing movement situation. Later, the 14-party leaders went to Ganabhaban and met with Sheikh Hasina. At that meeting, the 14-party alliance advised deploying the army and imposing a curfew to control the situation. After that, a curfew was imposed across the country from 12 midnight, along with army deployment.
Late at night, Law Minister Anisul Huq, Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, and State Minister for Information Mohammad Ali Arafat met with three coordinators of the quota movement and presented eight-point demands. At the same time, they stated that they had no connection with the violence and arson in the name of the movement. However, before that, Abdul Kader, one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, announced nine-point demands in a message sent to the media. The protesters announced that the program would continue until the demands were met.
How He Became a Martyr
Sayem witnessed government mismanagement with his own eyes from an early age. He was troubled by the ruling party's looting, money laundering, disappearances, murders, lack of justice, deprivation of the right to speak, killing and imprisoning of religious scholars, and so on. He understood that the people of the country would not be liberated as long as the autocratic government remained in power. Sayem Hossain Alif participated in the movement. He took to the streets. Due to the police's aggressive tear gas, pellet shots, hand grenades, and attacks from helicopters, the Kadamtali area was shrouded in smoke. Students took positions in alleys. Sayem sent the injured to hospitals. As evening approached and the situation seemed to have normalized, students and the public gradually started returning to their homes. The police and Jubo League terrorists were still waiting. Sheikh Hasina and her MPs' instructions were: the more bodies, the more rewards. Sayem was shot at 7:30 pm on July 19. He died around 8 pm.
How is His Family Doing?
Sayem Hossain Alif's father is a paralyzed patient. One side of his body is paralyzed. He takes regular medicine. His mother is a housewife. Sayem worked in a workshop to support the family. The family has now become very helpless.
