Description of the Incident
In July 2024, after the call for a nationwide anti-discrimination student movement, a turbulent situation prevailed everywhere. Like the rest of the country, the wave of the movement spread in Gouripur, Mymensingh as well. On July 20, Martyr Nure Alam went to Kaltapara market to buy medicine for his wife. He was collecting pictures and videos of the protesters at the market.
At around 12 noon, the ruthless police started lathi-charging the protesting students. Faced with the students' and people's protests, the police started firing bullets. He was seriously injured by a bullet. The police shot him in the chest, the very place where he nurtured his family's love. After lying on the street for half an hour, he was taken to Mymensingh Medical. He embraced martyrdom at the hospital shortly thereafter.
Wazkaruni, the martyr's uncle, said, "After finishing Madrasa class, he went to Kaltapara market, two kilometers away from his house. There, suddenly, a chase and counter-chase incident occurred between the police and the protesters. At this time, he was shot and killed by a bullet fired by the police."
He further said, "On the day of the incident, Nure Alam Siddiqui's parents went to a relative's wedding. There, his mother fainted upon hearing the news of her son being shot. Since then, she has not been able to speak normally. She only repeats one sentence over and over again, 'Bring my son back to me.'"
Abdul Halim, the father of Martyr Nure Alam Siddiqui, said with tears in his voice, "What was my son's crime? He doesn't do any politics, why did the police shoot him? If my son had committed a crime, the police could have put him in jail, why did they shoot him? Now everything is over for me. To whom will I appeal for justice?"
The martyr's neighbors are also mourning over this incident. They say that Martyr Nure Alam was a very good boy. He used to pray five times a day.
The neighbors say, "The incident is tragic. Seeing the family's tears at the loss of their son brings tears to our own eyes. May Allah accept him as a martyr."
On that day, during the movement, 14 people were shot in a clash with the police around 12 noon in the Kaltapara market area. Among them, 4 died. The rest are undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and a hospital in Dhaka.
Faruk Ahmed, the martyr's cousin, said about him, "He was known as a beloved person to everyone in the society. He had the characteristics of a simple and innocent nature. He joined the noble profession of teaching to spread education in the society and the area."
Abdul Malek, Nure Alam's cousin, said, "On the day of the incident, Sadia was feeling physically unwell in the morning. At this time, Nure Alam went to Kaltapara market to get medicine for his wife. I heard that he was shot while filming the clash incident on his mobile phone over there. He died after being taken to the hospital from there."
Ilias Mahmud, Nure Alam's brother-in-law, said, "Rakib's body had a bullet hole on the left side of his chest. He was my father-in-law's only son. The whole family is in mourning over his death. We will not file a case in this incident. Will filing a case bring Nure Alam back?"
