Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Shaheed Rahmat Mia was born on December 12, 2005, in Jamtal village, Bogura district. His day laborer father, Manju Mia, works in agriculture. His mother, Sufia Begum, is a homemaker. On January 14, 2024, he started working at SM Network Limited Company in Gazipur. This garment worker served as a sewing operator. He was martyred by BGB bullets on August 5, 2024, during the post-victory period.
Context of Martyrdom
August 5, 2024. The autocratic Hasina ousted from power. It was as if the country had achieved independence for the second time. People across the country were overwhelmed with joy. The general public took to the streets in celebration. In this overwhelming wave of joy, they seemed to lose their way. Tying flags on their chests, hands, heads, and wrists, some carrying their children on their shoulders, and others taking their entire families, including their wives, sons, and daughters, to the streets. Everyone wanted to witness this auspicious moment of victory.
Sixteen long years. What unbearable suffering the people of this country had endured. Awami League had been sitting upon the nation like a crushing stone. People had assumed that it might not be possible to remove this crushing stone anymore. That's why there was such an overwhelming celebration at the fall of this fascist killer government.
After lunch at two o'clock, Martyr Rahmat Mia left his local home. He joined the student and public movement. At this moment of victory, he and a few friends boarded a vehicle of the army, the vigilant guardians of Bangladesh's independence and sovereignty. While his friends got off the vehicle, he went further hoping to take a ride. "The country is independent today; I will roam as I please, I will go to Gazipur Chowrasta." After traveling some distance, Rahmat Mia got off at Gazipur Chowrasta and rejoined the protesters. Here, the trapped BGB fired shots into the sky to intimidate the public. The protesters dispersed. Some protesters regrouped and blocked the road again. This time, the BGB fired shots at the protesters. During this time, a bullet entered Rahmat Mia's right armpit and exited through his back. Rahmat Mia collapsed and died shortly after. However, his body was found at Al Hera Medical Center.
Reactions of the Martyr's Relatives
Deeply saddened by the death of Martyr Rahmat, his younger brother Al Amin said, "My elder brother forbade me from going to the movement and told me to stay at home. I never understood that he would tell me to stay at home and go to the movement himself and face the police bullets." Shaheed Rahmat's neighbor, Md. Ashraf, said, "Rahmat was a calm and good boy. He had been working in the garments industry for several years to support his family. His behavior was very good. We, the locals, are saddened by the loss of such a person. We demand justice for this barbaric killing and demand that Rahmat be declared a martyr with state honors and that his family be given facilities."
Special Information of the Martyr's Family
Martyr Rahmat Ali's home is in the remote char (river island) area of Jamthal in Sariakandi, Bogura. His father, Manju Mia, is a day laborer who has lost his homestead and is currently taking shelter on a land owned by a Union Parishad member. They have lost much due to long-term river erosion. To alleviate the family's poverty, Shaheed Rahmat Ali left his studies and took a job in the garments industry. He was a blessing to the family and the only capable earning member. Rashedul Islam Ripon, the head teacher of Jamthal Government Primary School, said, "The financial condition of the deceased Rahman's family is so bad that Rahmat left his studies and went to work in the garments industry due to poverty. Now his family is living a very miserable life. Their livelihood is now being supported by the laborer Father’s daily income and the help of the villagers." His brother, Al Amin, is a student, and his father, who is grieving the loss of his son, is still unable to work.
