Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Martyr Md. Sabuj was the son of Mohammad Ali and Jorina Begum from Konamaloncho village, Melandah Upazila, Jamalpur District. He was born on February 2, 2006. The martyr had one brother, and he was the elder of the two. His father, Mohammad Ali (42), was a rickshaw puller by profession, and his mother, Jorina Begum (34), was a homemaker. The martyr's father solely supported the four-member family, including his wife and children, by pulling a rickshaw. To alleviate his father's hardship, the 18-year-old Sabuj took on the responsibility of supporting the family. He used to pull a rickshaw in the Ashulia area of Dhaka. As he was unmarried, he gave all his earnings to his mother.
On August 5, 2024, victory processions and rallies were taking place across the country following the news of the autocrat's fall. Ashulia in Savar was no exception. Although Shaheed Sabuj went out for his livelihood as usual, that day he went out to join the victory procession. To suppress the procession, the police started firing indiscriminately at the students and the public. Sabuj was inside the procession at that time. Around 5:00 PM, he was critically injured by three bullets fired by the police. Two bullets directly hit his left chest, and another hit his lower abdomen. He was later taken to Enam Medical College Hospital at 6:45 PM. Two hours later, at 8:57 PM, he passed away. The martyr's body was taken to his village home at night. He was buried in his village the next morning.
Context of Martyrdom
"Students are the wealth of the country. Their development means the development of the country. Treating them with discrimination means discriminating against the country's future." You don't need to be a great scholar to understand these simple words. But the lure of power blinds people. When they get power, people lose their sense of right and wrong. They start to think they are all-powerful. They think everything is insignificant and trivial compared to their power. They want to blow everything away with a snap of their fingers. However, this cannot be done at will. Maybe success can be achieved for a couple of days, but in the annals of history, one ends up on the list of the despised. The country's top officials refused to acknowledge the quota as discrimination.
But rickshaw puller Shaheed Md. Sabuj understood that the quota system was a tool of discrimination. It devalued the merit of students and, above all, was contrary to justice. Despite being a son of an extremely poor family, Martyr Sabuj joined the ranks of the anti-discrimination students and the public. He declared solidarity with their programs. He wanted to share their joy. Considering the students' joy as his own joy, he joined the joyous procession in Ashulia on August 5th. But Hasina's remaining murderous forces fired at the students and the public in that joyous procession. Three bullets from their firing hit the flesh-worn body of labor. Perhaps Martyr Md. Sabuj lost his life. But have the murderers been able to destroy his spirit of equality?

Feelings of Relatives After Martyrdom
Martyr Sabuj had just turned 18. His parents were deeply saddened by the loss of Sabuj, a son from an extremely poor family. Martyr's mother, Jorina Begum, had cried her eyes dry. She was having trouble speaking due to the trembling of her body. Still, she said, "Why did they kill the king of my house? What was his fault?" The martyr's mother further said, "My son was very young, very good. I want justice for my son's killers." The martyr's uncle, Habibur Rahman, said, "He was a young man. Due to poverty, he used to pull a rickshaw with his father. He used to help his father. He was martyred on August 5th. He was very gentle and polite. We want proper justice for his killers." The martyr's maternal uncle, Hafizur Rahman, said, "He was always respectful to his parents and moved around the area in a simple and straightforward manner. He moved to the city to alleviate poverty, to pull a rickshaw with his father." His father demanded, "There should be justice for the brutal murder of my son, who shared the burden of the family with me. Along with this, they should be financially assisted by the government."
Special Information of the Martyr's Family
