Rabiul Islam

Shaheed Rabiul Islam was born on January 7, 1998, in Kulpala village, Sarishabari Thana, Jamalpur District. His elderly father, Julhas Uddin (80), is a farmer, and his mother, Amina Begum (70), is a homemaker. Martyr Rabiul Islam worked in the Quality Check Unit at North Knit Industries Limited. He supported himself and his elderly parents with his earnings. He lived in a rented house in the Naoroz area of Basan Thana, Gazipur, Dhaka, with his wife, Nazmun Nahar Laboni, and two-year-old daughter, Mobashera. On August 5, when news of the fall of the killer Hasina's government spread, celebratory processions were taking place across the country. Martyr Rabiul Islam joined a celebratory procession in Gazipur. When the police started firing indiscriminately at the procession, four or five bullets fired by the police hit Martyr Rabiul Islam's body. The bullets hit his chest, back, hands, and lower abdomen. He succumbed to his injuries around 5:20 PM, before he could be taken to the hospital. His family learned about his martyrdom around 8:00 PM.
Context of Martyrdom
The entire month of July 2024 was stirred by the wave of the anti-discrimination student and public movement, and similarly, the entire country was swept by the wave of the autocrat's fall. On August 5, when the long-awaited news arrived, everyone started joining victory processions. Shaheed Rabiul Islam, delighted by the fall of the Awami autocrat, joined a celebratory procession. Seeing his religious attire, the sadistic police became enraged. They detained him, took him in front of Basan Thana, and shot him four or five times, torturing him to death. The police shot him in the chest, back, hands, and lower abdomen. Although he died on the spot, his family came to know about his death after 8:00 PM.
Feelings of Relatives After Martyrdom
Shaheed Rabiul Islam was a pious person. He practiced his religion and also advised others to do the same. Anwar Hossain, the elder brother of Martyr Rabiul Islam, said, "My brother was very religious. He was different from us. He used to tell everyone at home to keep a beard, always talked about prayers, and tried to take care of everyone. Under what law in Bangladesh does a law enforcement officer kill someone like this? Who should we seek justice from? What was his crime? He did not do anything wrong. Now, who will earn and feed his elderly parents?" Rabiul's family demanded that his killers be brought to justice and that he be given due respect. They also sought comprehensive assistance to alleviate their financial hardship.
Special Information of the Martyr's Family
At the time of his death, Martyr Rabiul Islam left behind his wife, Nazmun Nahar Laboni, and a two-year-old daughter, Mobashera. He also left behind his octogenarian parents. The martyr's two elder brothers earn their livelihood by farming. Martyr Rabiul Islam had no other source of income. His wife and daughter are now living in their village home.
