Shaheed Shafiq Mia was born on August 12, 1985, in Chitholia village, Nakla Thana of Sherpur District. His father, Julhas Ali (76), and mother, Kanchani (60), are both elderly. Martyr Shafiq Mia lived in the Kanchpur area of Narayanganj with his wife and three daughters. He supported his family by working as a day laborer. His family consisted of his wife, Munni Begum (40), and daughters Meghna (11), Nadia (6), and Saida (2). He was martyred by police gunfire on August 4 at 5:00 PM.
Context of Martyrdom
Shaheed Shafiq Mia was an ordinary working-class person from the Kanchpur area of Narayanganj. This sole breadwinner of the family was brutally murdered by the police forces unleashed by killer Hasina.
From the beginning of August, unarmed students were shot at, and internet connections were cut off. In protest, the anti-discrimination student movement intensified across the country. Demanding justice for the student killings that occurred in July and protesting against the torture, ordinary people also took to the streets along with the students. Consequently, on August 4, 2024, student movement programs were being observed in various parts of the country. On this day, in the Kanchpur Bridge area of Narayanganj, police fired to disperse the joint student-public movement. At that time, Martyr Shafiq Mia was present on the Kanchpur Bridge. Around 5:00 PM, he was shot on the bridge by police gunfire and died on the spot. Shafiq Mia's lifeless body lay on the bridge. When the situation calmed down around 5:30 PM, ordinary people and protesting students recovered his body and took it to a nearby mosque, where his funeral prayers were held. Later, Shaheed Shafiq Mia's family members took his body to his village home in an ambulance, where he was buried.
Feelings of Relatives After Martyrdom
Shafiq's villagers and family demanded proper justice from the government for his murder. They want justice for this death so that such incidents do not befall any other ordinary family, and do not bring extreme devastation to ordinary families. Shafiq's neighbor, Md. Rafiqul Islam, said, "Martyr Shafiq Mia was martyred by police gunfire on August 4 at 5:00 PM. His family's condition is very dire. He has three young daughters. I request you to pay attention to his family. Please pray for the martyr."
