Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Martyr Shahin Mahmud Sheikh was born on July 22, 1980. His birthplace is Gobrikura village, Kakilakura Union, Sreebardi Upazila, Sherpur District. This is his ancestral village. His father, the late Shahjahan (80), was a peon in the land office. His mother's name is Obiron Nessa. She is currently a 70-year-old elderly woman.
Martyr Shahin Mahmud Sheikh lived with his wife and children in Rupnagar, Kaliakair Upazila, Gazipur District. He was a rickshaw puller by profession, and his wife, Salma Begum, is a garment worker. His two daughters are Sharmin (17) and Mim (15). Their family was happy with the combined income of the husband and wife. However, their happy family was instantly destroyed by the autocrat's oppressive actions.
Circumstances of Martyrdom
On August 5, 2024, the day when the autocrat faced ultimate defeat, when millions of students and the public were marching towards Gonobhaban, and the autocrat Hasina was forced to flee to India, her cohorts, her henchmen, and her pet police force, even after knowing about her escape, made a final strike, killing hundreds of innocent students and civilians. Martyr Shahin Mahmud Sheikh was a victim of those horrific and terrifying killings.
From mid-July, the anti-discrimination student movement swept across the country. Every day, countless students and civilians were being martyred across the country by police gunfire and the sharp weapons of Chhatra League and Juba League. The intensity of the movement was also increasing in parallel. Gradually, this movement turned into a single-point demand for the fall of the autocrat. The day of the final victory of this mass uprising of students and the public came on August 5, 2024. On this day, Martyr Shahin Mahmud Sheikh, along with his four friends, went to Rupnagar, Safipur, Kaliakair Upazila, Gazipur, at 10:00 AM to join the movement with the protesters.
Once he left, he never returned home. As the day passed and evening fell, he could not be found. His wife and daughters searched for him everywhere, but he was nowhere to be found. He was not reachable on the phone either. They spent the entire night sleepless. The next day, on August 6, a bullet-ridden body was found in a drain in Rupnagar, with four bullet wounds. Two bullets hit his neck, one his hand, and one his chest. Upon finding this unidentified body, the local people made an urgent announcement over the mosque's microphone. Martyr Shahin Mahmud's nephew heard this announcement. He informed the martyr's younger daughter, Mim, about the matter and took her to the body. Mim then identified the body as her father, Shahin Mahmud.
Additional Information About the Martyr
Martyr Shahin Mahmud Sheikh was a simple rickshaw puller who supported his family by pedaling his rickshaw in the battle of life. However, a horrific death engulfed him. A silent, unknown death, the announcement of which came over the mosque's microphone—news of an unidentified body! That unidentified body was none other than the father of two daughters, the sole support of the family, Martyr Shahin Mahmud. After Shahin Mahmud's death, their family was suddenly plunged into darkness. It has become impossible for Salma Begum to take care of her two daughters with her limited income from her garment work. Once a prosperous family is now plagued by the harshness of poverty.
Shahin's two daughters are living by clinging to their father's memories. The faces of these fatherless orphan girls are unbearable to look at. And Salma Begum, who lost her husband, has become disheartened. Yet, she is trying to stand strong, looking at the faces of her two daughters. Shahin's relatives, friends, and neighbors are all in mourning. To them, Martyr Shahin was not just a rickshaw puller; he was a struggling person who did not leave the path of struggle even with his life. His sacrifice will remain an everlasting memory for society.
