Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Martyr Md. Sakib Hasan was born in ward 63 of Jatrabari police station in Dhaka district. His father's name is Md. Mortuza Alam, and his mother's name is Parvin Begum. Sakib was a student by profession. He was studying in the first year of his degree at Donia College. Due to financial constraints, he worked in a pharmacy alongside his studies. He was a beacon of hope and the sole breadwinner for his ailing parents and brother.
Context of Martyrdom
July 18, 2024. A memorable day for the anti-discrimination student-public movement. Many students and citizens lost their lives to police bullets on this day. Meritorious students became protesters due to the reinstatement of the quota system. Countless people of the country joined them. Initially, the matter could have been resolved through discussion. The students also wanted this. There was no need to kill so many students and citizens. Sheikh Hasina is an arrogant, mentally deranged, and vindictive woman. She considered herself all-powerful. She could not tolerate even slight criticism of herself. Hasina's intention was to permanently establish her power by appointing the student league, known as Tokai League, infamous as a party of incompetent, inefficient, terrorists, sycophants, corrupt, and rapists, to all government jobs through fake freedom fighter quotas.
Her father, Sheikh Mujib, who was responsible for creating famine due to looting and corruption in the country's history, also wanted to stay in power permanently. Sakib understood that if his Awami League remained permanently in the country, ordinary students like him would never get recognition for their merit. They would have to live as second-class citizens in their own homeland. On the other hand, students like Sakib were angry that from the illegal Prime Minister of the Awami League to all ministers and MPs, even union leaders, were looting the country's wealth and building houses, cars, and properties abroad. In this country, whenever leaders' injustices were protested, or demands for rights were raised, they were labeled as Jamaat-Shibir and militants and subjected to various tortures including arrest, jail, disappearance, murder, and confiscation of all assets. Ordinary people, out of fear, had to flatter instead of protesting against the Awami League's activities even from their own Facebook IDs. On July 18, student leaders announced a blockade program in various places to protest against the brutal attacks and killings by ruling party’s accomplices and police. Conscientious students from all universities and colleges in the country supported and appeared on the streets. Sakib was a conscious and conscientious meritorious student.

On July 18, Sakib joined the movement at Kutubkhali Pocket Gate in Jatrabari area of Dhaka. Hasina ordered her forces to take the battlefield with weapons of war and resist even more harshly than before. Students were peacefully positioned on the streets. The whole country took the side of the students and took position in their respective residences. Jatrabari area was very important. The police of Jatrabari police station were a loyal force of the Awami League. They used to carry out various tortures on people to please Sheikh Hasina. On this day also, this force started aggressive behavior. They tried to remove the students from the road by baton charges, tear gas, and pellet shots. At this time, suddenly, an over-enthusiastic police's random shot hit Sakib in the back of the head. He fell to the ground. The people present took him to Unique Hospital, but the doctor on duty declared him dead. The next day, on July 19, his funeral prayers were offered, and he was buried in Kajlar Par graveyard. May Allah grant him Jannatul Ferdous.
Martyr's Economic Condition
Martyr Sakib Hasan's father is currently ill and does not work, and his mother is a housewife. Sakib's brother, Mehdi Hasan, is doing his BSc in Computer Science and Engineering at the renowned private university, Daffodil University. Sakib used to work in someone else's pharmacy alongside his studies. With Sakib's death, his family lost their working member.
The only source of income for Sakib's family is their house rent. They earn about 50,000 taka from rent. But it has become difficult for their family to manage, as it is difficult to cover his father's medical expenses and his brother's private university education with this money.
