Context of the Incident
The people of the country became enraged due to the autocratic government's reckless decisions in the anti-quota movement. When students and the public took to the streets, police from various police stations attacked the public with all the dangerous weapons of the battlefield, brutally torturing them. In this case, Jatrabari Police Station was at the forefront. Along with killing on the streets, they were killing by targeting with snipers from the top of buildings. As a result, the enraged public gathered and counter-attacked this police station. They set the police station on fire. Abdul Halim, a local resident of Jatrabari, told reporters, "Locals had a lot of anger towards Jatrabari Police Station. Many people have been tortured in various ways. Also, they shot and killed the most students. That is why ordinary people burned down the police station out of anger towards them."
Eyewitnesses in the area said that thousands of people surrounded the police station and attacked. At that time, heavy firing took place from the police station. More than three hundred people were shot. Among them, many were killed. 4-5 policemen also died there. Many of their bodies were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and various hospitals. On Monday afternoon around 5 pm, the protesters surrounded the police station and besieged the police. A large team of police came out of the police station in a filmy style and moved forward, firing indiscriminately. At that time, many people were shot and injured. However, a few policemen were trapped in the police station. They were lynched and killed there. According to DMCH sources, more than 40 bodies from Jatrabari went to DMCH hospital.
How He Became a Martyr
Parvez Mia participated in the movement against the autocratic government. He regularly joined processions. On August 5, as a result of the Hasina government's escape, students and the public came down to the streets in joy. They did not think that the killer government's police force was still lying in ambush to carry out genocide. During the movement, after going to the Kajla area of Jatrabari in the afternoon, he was shot in the chest. He fell face down on the road. With the help of helpers, he was first taken to Mugda Medical College. Doctors there declared Parvez dead. The next day, after the funeral, he was buried in Jatrabari graveyard.
How is His Family Doing?
The martyr's father left the world 20 years ago, leaving Parvez an orphan. His mother raised her son, first with the help of relatives and later by working herself. Parvez's mother was thinking of retiring from her job after Parvez joined her in work.
