Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Md. Sohag lived in Banshal, Dhaka, with his only wife and child. He was a businessman. He had a sewing machine table business. Although he himself was less educated, he had his wife complete her master's degree. Md. Sohag was one of those whose blood freed the country from autocracy.
How He Became a Martyr
To solidify her power, Sheikh Hasina began appointing her party's terrorists and sycophants to government jobs. To justify the recruitment process, she chose the freedom fighter quota. The freedom fighter quota, which was canceled in 2018 due to student movements, was brought back on July 5, 2024. Students of Dhaka University held protest marches and rallies in response. After the protests, a delegation of protesters submitted a memorandum to the Attorney General at the Supreme Court. On July 9, Dhaka University students again held a protest rally against the reinstatement of the quota system. They gave the government until June 30 to accept their demands. The state's application to stay the High Court's verdict on quota cancellation was scheduled for hearing on July 4 by the full bench of the Appellate Division. But the hearing did not take place. On Friday, July 12, even on a holiday, protests took place in various university and college campuses across the country. On July 13, State Minister for Information Arafat said that the government has nothing to do now. On July 14, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the President and gave the government 24 hours to demand a reasonable reform of the quota by calling an emergency session of Parliament. After a failed China tour, Sheikh Hasina declared the protesting students as grandchildren of Razakars in response to a question at a press conference. In protest, slogans arose in various halls of Dhaka University around nine o'clock at night, "Who are you? Who am I? Razakar! Razakar! Who said, who said? Autocrat! Autocrat!"
Writer Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, acting as a lackey for killer Hasina, blamed the students. As a result, students and the public started boycotting Zafar Iqbal. All publications one by one announced that they would confiscate Zafar Iqbal's books from their publications and would not publish them in the future. Students declared Zafar Iqbal unwanted for his past pro-Awami League activities. On July 15, Obaidul Quader told reporters that the Chhatra League would respond to the protesters' 'Razakar' slogans. Chhatra League President Saddam commented, "We will show the end to those who are chanting 'I am Razakar' slogans."
On July 16, Chhatra League goons attacked the peaceful protests called by students in various places, and Abu Saeed in Rangpur, Wasim, Shanto, Farooq in Chittagong, and Sabuj Ali and Shahjahan in Dhaka were martyred by police bullets.
On July 17, ordinary students expelled Chhatra League leaders and workers from Dhaka University and various universities across the country and declared them 'politics-free'. The coffin procession of students at Dhaka University was disrupted by police tear gas shells and sound grenades.
As per the students' announcement, the complete shutdown program started on July 18 and 19. Armed Chhatra League goons and police attacks on protest marches in almost all educational institutions across the country caused widespread injuries and loss of life. 40 students and the public were shot on July 18, and several hundred on July 19.
A curfew and army deployment were announced across the country. A general holiday was declared. A total of 71 people were martyred by police and BGB bullets. Every day, someone was being arrested, injured, or killed by the League forces. The illegal government started mass arrests by filing thousands of cases.
According to a July 27 newspaper report, 9,121 people were arrested in 11 days. People started leaving their homes in fear. Due to the mobile internet being shut down for a week, the people of the country were living in fear. Sheikh Hasina prepared to carry out genocide. At the 14-party meeting, a decision was made to ban Jamaat-Shibir. Her intention was to kill students and the public and accusing Jamaat-Shibir of the murders and subsequently to suppress the movement forever. Sheikh Hasina has been doing the same thing in last 16 years.
The students and the public expressed their protest by turning their Facebook profiles red. On August 1, the India-controlled Hasina government issued a notification banning Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir for their role in the student-public movement. The public understood the Awami League's intentions. On August 4, Awami terrorists again attacked student-public protest marches across the country, including the capital Dhaka. On this day, Awami terrorists shot students along with the police. But thousands of students resisted the terrorists and invading police BGB with bricks and stones. The army also shot in several places. 130 people were killed across the country. The student public gave a program of a long march towards Dhaka the next day. From the morning of August 5, the police, BGB, and army took a very aggressive position.
A fragmented war started between the students and the public all over Dhaka city. After 10:30 am, Hasina fled under the supervision of the army. The on-duty police, unaware of this news, continued to fight with the public. They continued to kill many people. At 1 pm, people learned that Hasina had fled. In extreme joy, people started distributing sweets in every alley across the country and hugged each other saying Eid Mubarak. People started prostrating to Allah on the streets, thanking Him. The protesting students and the public broke all the statues of the autocrat Mujib at various intersections in the country. Police and Awami terrorists fled and went into hiding. A small number were injured and killed in the wrath of the students and the public. In the capital, the public went to the Parliament and Ganabhaban and offered Shukrana prayers.
Md. Sohag and his family were supporting the movement against the autocratic Hasina government. On August 5, after hearing that Sheikh Hasina had fled to India in the afternoon, he joined a joy procession. Md. Sohag joined the public and went to occupy Ganabhaban. In the evening, he returned home and spent time with his family. After Isha prayers, he went out again to hang out with friends. Seeing signs of trouble at Banshal Notun Chourasta, he went to see. He never thought that the killer forces of the autocratic government would still have the courage to shoot at the public. While going to see the trouble, he was shot in the right side of the chest before he could understand anything. The young man died instantly. The next day, he was buried in Banshal Panchayat Graveyard.
