Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Mostak Ahmed was a courageous son of Habiganj district, who sacrificed his life to oust the autocratic government of Sheikh Hasina. He was the youngest among four brothers and three sisters, with his mother named Maya Begum. Mostak worked as an employee in the electricity department. His family currently resides in a government-provided house in the Dhonpur cluster village of the Ashrayan project in Kandigaon Union, Sylhet Sadar Upazila.
Context of the Martyrdom
The Awami League realized that the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir were actively working in the anti-discrimination student-public movement to remove their corrupt government. For this reason, on August 1, 2024, the autocratic government banned Jamaat and Shibir. The people of the country became even more angry. By then, they had understood that anyone who protested against injustice in this country would be labeled as a Razakar and anti-liberation. Protesters are beaten and labeled as Jamaat-Shibir. The public realizes that the real protectors of the country's independence and opponents of injustice are Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir. The patriotic people further realize that by banning Jamaat-Shibir, the government is essentially preparing for genocide to eliminate the movement. On August 2, students and the public ignored the government's decision and took part in the anti-discrimination movement on the streets. On August 2, a new program was announced - 'Protest march across the country on Saturday and an all-out non-cooperation movement from tomorrow, Sunday'.
How He Was Shot
On August 2, students of the anti-discrimination student movement took position in front of the Court Mosque in Habiganj city after Friday prayers. Later they took out a protest march in the city. In the Town Hall area of the city, Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders and workers were in an armed state. When the students were marching through the main road of the city in front of the district Awami League office, Awami League and allied organizations leaders and workers led by former MP Abu Zahir attacked the protesters. At this time, Mostak Ahmed was shot and seriously injured. Later, when he was taken to Habiganj 250-bed District Hospital, the doctor declared him dead. Mostak's autopsy was conducted at Habiganj District Hospital on Saturday morning. Resident doctor Momin Uddin Chowdhury of the hospital said, "He had a serious injury on his right arm from behind, that is, under the armpit. Mostak died due to excessive bleeding from that injury. The injury can be said to be like a bullet. On Saturday, after the Johar prayers, Mostak's body was buried in the local graveyard after the funeral at Gauripur Mosque premises. People from all walks of life of the area took part in the funeral.
Family's Statement
"We had begun searching for a girl for Mostak's wedding," remarked cousin Raja. My brother is no longer with us. "From what I understand, Mostak wanted to explain how he was shot before he passed away," he stated. He simply stated, "The police's white car (APC) fired the bullet."
Following Friday prayers, Mostak went to acquire shoes after eating lunch, according to his older brother Moyna Mia. A fight broke out as the sneakers were being taken. He was later shot. That is all we are aware of. According to Gauripur resident Badsha Miah, "Mostak had a very difficult upbringing. He was also multi-talented.
