The Blood of an Honest Driver: The Story of Martyr
Martyr’s Introduction
Md. Shahjahan Miah was an ordinary CNG driver—but his death transformed him into someone extraordinary. He lived each day with a singular purpose: to bring joy to his family’s faces. Today, he is no more. But the soil soaked with his blood still sings of his quiet courage and sacrifice.
Birth and Early Life
Born in 1980 in the remote village of Sonkapon under Moulvibazar District, Shahjahan Miah was the son of farmer Arsh Ali Miah and Rabeya Khatun. From a poor agrarian background, he stepped into the responsibilities of family life at a young age. His dream was simple—to see his parents smile, to send his children to school, and to free his loved ones from the weight of poverty.
Livelihood
Neither poverty nor hardship could break his spirit. Seeking better income, he moved to Sylhet city where he drove a CNG autorickshaw, earning modestly to support his aging parents, wife, and children. His residence was a rented house in Dharatepur, South Surma, Sylhet. Despite exhaustion from long working hours, he would return home occasionally just to witness his family’s joy, especially in the smile of his 8-year-old son, Samrat, a nursery student at a Qawmi Madrasa. He would never live to hold his newborn daughter, Saima.
Economic Condition
The family owned no land or property. They lived in a rented home in Sylhet, relying entirely on Shahjahan’s income. Occasionally, his brother—an expatriate in Dubai—would provide some support. The family survived with great difficulty. After his death, they have become completely destitute.
Involvement in the Movement & Context
The months of July and August 2024 marked a historic people’s uprising across Bangladesh. A student-led movement against injustice, inequality, and authoritarian rule turned into a mass revolt, toppling 15.5 years of oppressive governance. On August 5, people across the country took to the streets in joyous victory processions. From students and workers to teachers and citizens, the nation rejoiced.
Shahjahan Miah was among them. Though a simple CNG driver, he was a conscious citizen of Bangladesh. He believed the winds of change would one day bring light into his own life too. And so, he joined the celebration—not as a politician, but as a hopeful man who wanted to witness a new dawn.
How He Was Martyred
On August 5, a jubilant procession marched past the South Surma police station in Sylhet. As the crowd reached the station gate, the police opened fire without provocation. The peaceful celebration turned into panic and bloodshed.
Shahjahan Miah was among those in the procession. Between 3:00 and 4:00 PM, he was shot by police and collapsed on the ground. He died there, without receiving any medical help. In a further act of cruelty, the police allegedly disappeared with his body. His family has not received his remains to this day.
A week after his death, on August 12, his daughter Saima was born—never to see her father’s face, never to be held in his arms.
Family’s Grief and Testimony
His father, Arsh Ali Miah, said through tears,
“Last Eid was full of joy. This time, it’s only tears. My son didn’t come home. He used to bring us gifts, new clothes for Eid. Now the day comes and goes, but our house is silent. We saw in video footage how he was gunned down. I want justice for my son.”
Neighbor Jahanara Begum added,
“Shahjahan ran his family by driving a CNG in Sylhet. Every Eid, he’d bring new clothes for his parents. This year, there was no one. It’s heartbreaking to look at his wife and children. His death has shattered us all.”
Circumstances of the Incident
During the August 5 post-regime-fall celebrations, many civilians lost their lives. Shahjahan Mia, one of them, joined the victory procession in front of South Surma police station. As the gate was breached, police opened fire. He was shot and killed. His wife was pregnant at the time, and a week later gave birth to their daughter, now fatherless from birth. The police allegedly hid his body, and to this day, the family has never been able to bury him.
Economic and Social Proposals
Proposal 1: A monthly stipend of 15,000 BDT for the children’s living and education expenses.
Proposal 2: A permanent home should be built for the family to live in safety and dignity.
Shahjahan Miah was an honest, hardworking man who never sought glory. He wanted only to support his family. But history drew him into its pages with blood and fire. His martyrdom was not in vain—it became a part of a greater people’s movement, a testimony of how even the common man can write history.
He is one of the finest sons of this land—those who buy freedom’s morning with their blood. For his sacrifice to find meaning, we must ensure his children are given the gift of education and his family the shelter of dignity.
