Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Martyr Profile
From the remote village of Birgaon Nilokha West Para in Raipura Upazila, Narsingdi, came a humble farmer, Md. Hasan Miah . A man who wove a lifetime of struggle into his being and remained spiritually bonded to his country until he sacrificed his life. Born on August 7, 1978, to Chunnu Miah and Alesha Khatun, both of whom passed away long ago, Hasan Miah lived life on his own terms. He was simple, honest, and selfless. This steadfast farmer, who never yielded in the struggle of life, finally emerged victorious in death as a martyr.
Birth and Livelihood
Hasan Mia survived by working on others' fields as he owned no land of his own. He spent his days cutting paddy under the sun, carrying bananas, and repairing dikes. His daily sustenance was one handful of rice and half a night's sleep. He divorced his first wife Popi in 2008, and his second marriage with Fulmala also ended. He left behind three children to walk a lonely path.
Economic Situation
Hasan Mia’s deepest pain was his children’s uncertain future. His eldest son, Rahmatullah, is currently studying at a technical school under the care of his eldest uncle. Rakib Miah , the second child from the second marriage, studies in grade five but has lacked parental care since the family broke apart. His daughter Afsana’s fate seems bound for marriage rather than education. The family has no land and lives in a small, dilapidated tin-shaded home.
Participation in the Movement
In July 2024, the anti-discrimination student movement spread across the country. Not only students but ordinary people like Hasan Miah also joined, recognizing it as a fight for their rights. On the morning of July 20, near Meherpara Union Parishad, Hasan Miah joined the march holding a flag he had made himself. His eyes shone with hope, his voice ignited with slogans.
Historical Context of July-August 2024
Those months marked a new awakening in Bangladesh’s history. Students and citizens protested against discrimination and injustice nationwide. Law enforcement agencies, including the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), repeatedly attacked peaceful marches. Yet, the people's resolve remained unbroken.
How He Was Martyred
At around noon on July 20, Hasan Miah was chanting slogans in front of the Union Parishad with students. Suddenly, gunfire shattered the air. The BGB opened fire on the peaceful protesters. Amid the screams and chaos, a bullet struck Hasan Miah in the chest. He fell immediately and never rose again. No one could call for him or touch him. Around 12:30 PM, local youths carried his lifeless body to his village, where he was laid to rest on his native soil.
Family’s Remembrance
Hasan Miah ’s brother, with tears and a choked voice, said, “He was no leader or speaker, but he showed patriotism till his last breath.†His son Rahmatullah stood silently by the grave, touched the earth, and said, “Father, I will finish my studies and fight injustice just like you. Watch me.â€
Recommendations
1. Monthly financial support of at least 15,000 BDT to ensure Rahmatullah’s education and the family’s livelihood.
2. Construction of a tin-shed house in Birgaon village to preserve Hasan Miah ’s memory and provide safe shelter for his children.
Not just one martyr, but the voice of thousands of nameless protesters. Hasan Miah represented all those who do not seek power but justice. His blood-stained soil reminds us that Bangladesh still lives in protest and will not rest until fairness prevails.
