Martyr Profile
There was a blaze of protest hidden in the very name Md. Biplob. He was born on January 5, 2009, in a poor farming family in the village of Kadamtali, under Dhanbari Police Station, Tangail District. His father, Abdul Khalek, worked as a day laborer on others' land to support the family. His mother, Bilkis Begum, was a homemaker. The family also included Biplob’s younger brother Bijoy—just 8 years old—who studied in nursery at Prottasha Model School.
Early Life and Work
From an early age, Biplob saw life through the lens of deprivation. His father's sweat-soaked toil, his mother’s weary eyes, and his little brother’s helpless gaze instilled in him a fierce determination to conquer life’s hardships. Alongside his studies, Biplob worked in Gazipur’s Maona area—sometimes in a factory, sometimes at a shop.
His sole ambition was to free his father from the burden of day labor, to provide his mother with proper treatment and comfort, and to ensure his little brother could grow up with dignity. This adolescent shouldered the weight of his family long before most boys his age understood responsibility.
Economic Condition
The family stood far below the poverty line. The entire household relied on Abdul Khalek’s daily labor. Whatever Biplob managed to earn in Maona, he would send home to his mother. On phone calls he would say:
“Ma, raise Bijoy well. I won't let you and Abba suffer anymore.â€
Those words now echo painfully in his mother’s ears, tears flowing down her face with every memory.
Joining the Movement & July–August Context
The months of July and August 2024 marked the dawn of a blood-stained chapter in Bangladesh’s history. The masses rose in defiance against injustice, exploitation, and corruption. Students flooded the streets, and working-class people like Biplob joined their voices with theirs.
August 5 was a decisive day of the people’s uprising. Maona Chourasta in Gazipur was occupied by student and public demonstrators. The Dhaka–Mymensingh highway roared with chants for change. Factories were closed, and Biplob, along with his coworkers, joined the victory march (Bijoy Michhil). His heart was full of dreams, his eyes focused on the future.
But that future was shattered in an instant.
The Day He Became a Martyr
3:30 PM — The victory march reached Palli Bidyut intersection. Suddenly, instigated by members of the ruling Awami League and Chhatra League, police opened fire on the unarmed crowd. Bullets rained down like thunderbolts. One struck Biplob near his eye and passed through his head. He collapsed instantly. His friends rushed him to Maona Al-Hera Medical Center, but the doctors declared him dead on arrival. The exact time—3:30 PM—the same moment the bullet had ended a young life, a dream, and a solemn vow.
Words from Loved Ones
His father, Abdul Khalek, said through tears:
“I am lost without my son who bore our family’s burdens. He always cared for us. His mother is devastated with grief. I plead with the government—help us. And I demand justice for his killing.â€
Neighbor Iqbal Hossain said:
“I saw him from a young age—always vocal against injustice. He was martyred in the victory march of the anti-discrimination student movement. His family couldn’t even attempt legal action because of their extreme poverty.â€
Biplob’s death is not just a statistic—it is a symbol of a generation’s pain. His blood was not just the loss of one young soul; it questions us all:
“How many more must die before we return to the path of justice?â€
His courage, sacrifice, and ideals will remain a beacon of light in all future movements for justice. May Allah grant him the dignity of a martyr. Ameen.
Recommendations
1. A small business should be arranged for Biplob’s father so he can live with dignity and support his family.
2. Monthly financial assistance of BDT 15,000 should be provided to the martyr’s family by the state or civil society.
3. An education scholarship for his younger brother Bijoy should be introduced to help fulfill Biplob’s unfinished dream.
