Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Martyr Zahidul Islam was born on January 1, 1996, in the Hatkhola Para village of Badarganj Thana, Rangpur District, to father Md. Rafiqul Islam and mother Mosammat Amena Begum. His father was a rickshaw driver, and his mother worked in a garment factory. Zahidul had three brothers, and he was the eldest. By profession, Zahidul was a barber. He married Rina Begum from Amrul Bari Hatpara village in Botgore Union, Rangpur District, and lived at his in-laws' house. He did not have his own home. He supported his family by working as a barber.
How Zahidul Islam Became a Martyr
A protest rally of students and the public took place in front of Ashulia Thana under the banner of the anti-discrimination student movement. Martyr Zahidul Islam joined the movement, demanding one main goal: to free the country from fascism. The movement to build a quota-free and discrimination-free Bangladesh started at the beginning of July, and it saw participation from students and people from all walks of life, regardless of political affiliation. From children to barbers, many gave their lives for this cause.
After witnessing the brutality of the movement, many people joined the students and public in the "Long March to Dhaka" to free the country from the tyrannical government. To suppress the protesters, the fascist government's bloodthirsty police force devised several plans. The police started indiscriminate firing from the sixth floor of Ashulia Thana to disperse the protesters. Many people were injured in the gunfire. One of the bullets from the fascist police struck Zahidul in the back of his head and exited through the front. His fellow fighters, risking their own lives, immediately took him to Ashulia's Mother and Child Hospital. While receiving treatment at the hospital, he breathed his last.
Martyr Zahidul Islam's Dream
Zahidul had hoped to give his little daughter a beautiful life. He also dreamed of freeing his country. Unfortunately, he did not live to see his country free. His dream was far-reaching, but the rulers who looted the nation's wealth, along with the sycophantic police, did not let him fulfill his dream. With unfinished dreams, Martyr Zahidul Islam left this world and moved on to a peaceful, beautiful garden flowing with waterfalls.
Zahidul Islam Will Never Return Home
Martyr Zahidul Islam was a religious man. He always protested against injustice. He had good relationships with everyone. Even though he came to Dhaka from the village in search of a livelihood, he worked in a salon in Gazipur to support his family. His family is now grieving his loss. His young daughter has become an orphan, and the shade of the banyan tree that once protected her is not existed now.
