Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Sujan Hossain’s life is a tale of struggle and simplicity. He was born on October 25, 1999, into a poor family in the village of West Saradubi, Lalmonirhat district. His father, Mohammad Shahidul Islam, is a hardworking 65-year-old man, and his mother, Mrs. Rajia, is a housewife. Sujan is the eldest of four siblings, and he took on the responsibility of caring for his younger brothers and sisters. Growing up in a financially struggling household, Sujan learned to struggle from a young age. He started working in a garment factory in Dhaka while continuing his education. He would send more money to his family than for his own needs. Despite his challenging life, his love for education remained unwavering. His dual life as both a worker and a student were filled with the harsh realities of life, but he continued to dream of moving forward. The pain of poverty, hard work, and his deep love for his family turned Sujan into a true symbol of life’s struggle.
The Incident of Martyrdom
The life story of Shaheed Sujan Hossain is a tragic irony. At a time when a young man should be thinking about his dreams, desires, and family, Sujan’s life took a turn under the immense pressure of his unshakable family responsibilities. His father, who had once been the head of the household, was physically incapacitated, and now the burden of supporting the family fell upon Sujan’s shoulders. He sacrificed his own happiness and dreams for the well-being of his family. His sole goal was to keep the family afloat, and he even treated his abandoned sister with the same love and care as any other family member.
He came to Dhaka and took a job as a junior operator in a garment factory, struggling to make ends meet with a small salary. After each month, he would keep 500 Taka for himself and send the rest to his family. Despite the financial hardship, he never felt exhausted; instead, he found peace in the sight of his family’s smiling faces. However, fate cruelly turned his peaceful life upside down in an instant.
On the cursed day of August 5, 2024, Sujan’s life was taken away. At 7:30 AM, he called his friend Hasan Mahmud Rana and said, “Today, there is a meeting between the army chief and Sheikh Hasina. Let me know what the news says.” After this conversation, he hung up. Later in the afternoon, a post appeared on his Facebook page reading, “The downfall of the autocrat.” This short phrase seemed to be his final words. In the evening, Sujan shared a video, filmed from a foot-over bridge, where he said, “Here in Ashulia, the police are shooting and killing many people.” That video sounded like the death toll. After some time, when his friend tried to call him on Messenger, Sujan’s phone no longer rang. The fear gradually became a reality.
Later that night, the news arrived—Sujan was no more. He had been shot and killed in his act of protest. That night, the only sound in Sujan’s home was the cry of sorrow. Everyone was in shock, and no one tried to stop the tears. When his friend Hasan Mahmud woke up to hear the crying that night, he knew that Sujan would not return. With a heart full of sorrow, he moved forward to dig Sujan’s grave. Despite the heavy rain, the grave was dug under an umbrella, as if nature itself was mourning his untimely death.
The next day, in the heavy rain, the funeral prayers were held. The downpour seemed unrelenting, but still, people gathered. With tears in the eyes of hundreds, Sujan was buried. His death created a profound void in the area because Sujan was not just a young man; he was a voice of protest. For the last 16 years, under the tyrannical rule of Sheikh Hasina, he had fought against the oppression of the people—against the denial of voting rights, skyrocketing prices, and various injustices. He was a fearless soldier in the battle for justice. His death did not only bring sorrow to his family, but it also shook the entire community. Today, Sujan is no more, but his spirit of resistance, his sacrifice, and the pain of his martyrdom live on in his family’s tears and in the hearts of the people of his village. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdous. This prayer is on everyone’s lips today.
Feelings of Close Relatives about the Martyr
Shaheed Sujan Hossain was my dear friend, and the moments spent with him are still bright in my memory. He was a sociable person, always by my side with a smile. Though he was four years older than me, the bond of our friendship was unique. Sujan often had deep thoughts about his family, especially concerning his younger sister. The issue of collecting dowry money would often worry him. He would express his frustration by saying, “Where will I find so much dowry money?” I could only listen, feeling his pain. He was an industrious person who worked tirelessly. Alongside his studies, he worked at the local market, cutting and selling chicken, but the income was never enough. Due to his helpless father, he decided to take a job at a garment factory in Savar, Dhaka, with the help of his uncle. There, he managed to support his family and bring some happiness into their lives through his hard work.
However, Sujan’s story became dark when he joined the anti-discrimination student movement. He was martyred by the police's bullets while fighting for his rights. His death was a blow not only to his family but to our entire community. When I remember him, I think of him as a brave warrior with a heart full of kindness. Sujan is no longer with us, but his ideals and struggles will live forever in our hearts.
Economic Condition of the Martyr’s Family
Sujan Hossain was the sole breadwinner of his family. He worked at a garment factory in Jamgara, Savar, and supported his family while continuing his education. His father was disabled, unable to work due to congenital problems with his left hand and left foot. As a result, Sujan bore the entire responsibility of the family. But one day, unexpectedly, Sujan became a martyr. His death caused an unbearable grief in the family. Now, they are left wondering how to manage and how to support the household expenses. Sujan’s absence has cast a shadow over their lives. In this hardship, they hope that society will come forward to help them, so they can find some light in their lives.
