Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Al Mamun was a brilliant student of Shibganj Degree College. He was born and raised in Chhitchila village, Mohammadpur Union, Thakurgaon Sadar Thana, Thakurgaon District. He spent his childhood in the lush green rural environment, which helped him develop in the gentle embrace of nature.
His father, Md. Ainul Haque, 65, was a businessman who ran a sound system business. His monthly income was just 12,000 BDT, which made it difficult for the family to make ends meet. His mother, Ms. Mokseda Begum, 50, was a homemaker. Despite being born into a poor family, Al Mamun was exceptionally intelligent and well-mannered. Although his family was financially weak, Al Mamun always thought of supporting them while pursuing his studies. His deep interest in education and sense of responsibility earned him respect from all. He was known as an exemplary student in both his village and educational institution.
The Incident of Martyrdom
Al Mamun was one of the brave warriors of the 2024 anti-discrimination movement. To his family and the people of his area, Mamun was a youth with an exemplary character. Due to his political stance, his family was regularly harassed by the supporters of Sayeed Commissioner. They were harassed by the police in various ways, and Mamun could not even sleep in his own home peacefully. Amidst these struggles, Mamun's family received the happy news of the birth of a beautiful baby girl. The arrival of the baby filled Mamun and his family with joy. However, amidst this happiness, a nationwide movement against quotas began. Mamun and his elder brother participated in the front line of the movement. Every day, they joined the movement's activities together, believing it would bring justice to the future generations of the country.
On 5th August 2024, an important day of the anti-dictatorship movement, Mamun participated in the victory procession, which reached the Baliyadanghi intersection in Thakurgaon. Local Sayeed Commissioner invited the protesters to sit at his house, thinking perhaps he wanted to offer a compromise. But it was a pre-planned trap. Sayeed Commissioner and his associates had already set up a trap with gas cylinders and petrol inside the house. As soon as the protesters entered the house, they quickly fled and set the place on fire. Within moments, the cylinders exploded, and the house was engulfed in flames. The protesters inside were severely burned and writhed in pain. The local people immediately tried to rescue the victims and take them to the hospital.
On the way, one protester died on 5th August, and another died after reaching the hospital. Al Mamun was rushed from Thakurgaon to Dhaka, but on 6th August, at 6 AM, near Shyamoli, Mamun breathed his last. The brave martyr, after battling with death, passed away and was taken into the embrace of Almighty Allah. Mamun's brutal death has deeply saddened not only his family but the entire community. The people have demanded the harshest punishment for Sayeed Commissioner and his associates for this heinous and barbaric act.
Family's Sentiments About the Martyr
The family members say that he was a joyful and sociable person. Mamun's little child, who was just a baby, couldn’t understand that his father would never return. Such a good person like him is rare. If anyone had a problem, Al Mamun would rush to solve it. His cousin, who was nearby during the incident, was also burned. He says they were tricked by Sayeed Commissioner, who had invited them to discuss the situation but had set up the planned incident.
Family's Economic Condition
The financial story of Martyr Al Mamun's family is very painful. His father, who had been supporting the family through a sound system rental business for a long time, is now facing severe physical problems. After an accident that left him injured, he has been suffering from back pain. Despite this physical limitation, he earns between 10,000 to 12,000 BDT every month from the sound system and decoration business. However, this income is insufficient to meet all the family’s needs. Mamun's elder brother, Moksed Ali, continues his studies and tutors’ people at their homes, earning only 5,000 BDT a month. This income does not contribute significantly to the family’s financial needs. Moksed Ali is still unmarried and has been standing by his family, but the financial situation is so dire that his income is not enough.
Meanwhile, Mamun's mother suffers from diabetes and her monthly medical expenses are 7,000 BDT. She had also suffered a stroke previously, which has worsened her condition. The family needs regular medication for both parents, but their income barely covers their daily needs, let alone medical costs. The family is not just struggling to meet daily expenses but is also deeply in debt due to medical expenses. The tragic death of Al Mamun has deepened their pain and hardship, and the family is falling into further crisis due to these circumstances.
