Incident Details
Born into a poor family, Martyr Md. Nur Alam moved to Gazipur at a young age in search of work. He lived with his parents in a rented house and worked as a mason under a contractor, alongside three friends. During the student movement against discrimination, students and the public occupied Gazipur Chaurasta (intersection), leading to a massive gathering of people. Despite internet shutdowns and curfews, protests continued. The authoritarian government responded with inhumane actions, using tear gas, rubber bullets, sound grenades, and live ammunition against the protesters, creating a terrifying situation akin to a war. The general public was fearful for their safety, with many hesitant to go to work.
In this environment, Martyr Nur Alam refrained from going to work. However, on July 19, 2024, he left home with a friend to collect his dues. As they approached Gazipur Chaurasta through local alleys, the police, instigated by the government, began firing from helicopters. The protesters scattered in all directions. Hearing the gunfire, Nur Alam attempted to run along the main road to find safety but was struck by a bullet from the sky before he could reach a safe place. Many were injured due to the armed forces' gunfire, and numerous bodies lay on the road, but no one dared to approach them. According to his friend, after the helicopters left, he searched for Nur Alam but couldn't find him.
Later, when he called Nur Alam's phone, someone answered and said he was at Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College, where doctors had already declared him dead. Upon hearing this, his friend informed his father. His father, along with five others, went to the medical college to find the body. They discovered that a bullet had entered his forehead and exited from the back of his head. Overcome with grief, they informed his mother, who was devastated but couldn't come to the hospital due to the situation outside. Around 3 PM, she managed to come to the hospital and cried uncontrollably. Later, when the family requested the body, the hospital authorities initially refused but handed it over around 11 PM after persistent efforts. The family, in mourning, took the body to Kurigram. As the ambulance passed through the village roads, the local people stood by, shedding tears. People from all walks of life attended the funeral prayers, praying for his soul and seeking justice from Allah. This innocent laborer lost his life for a just cause, leaving his family in profound sorrow.
