Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Martyr Rabiul Islam Rahul was born on November 12, 2007. His father, Mohammad Muslim Uddin, earns a living by selling fish in the area. Rahul is the youngest of three brothers. He was loved by everyone in the family. His two elder brothers work in garments and mobile servicing.
Shaheed Rabiul Islam Rahul is the son of Moslem Uddin from the Vidurshai Maharajpur area of Fazilpur Union in Dinajpur Sadar Upazila. He was a twelfth-grade student at Raniganj Yahia Hossain School and College. Studying and playing were his only focus. When the nationwide movement for quota reform began among the student community, Rahul, as a student, also became involved. He was an active participant in every program of the quota reform and anti-discrimination movement.
Finally, on August 4, 2024, he was injured by rubber bullets and shotgun pellets fired by the police at a rally of protesters and was admitted to the hospital. Later, he died in the ICU due to an infection in the wound.
The Day of the Incident
Since his birth, 17-year-old Rahul had only seen the Awami League and its fascist rule. The suppression of dissent, the killing of people in broad daylight through tagging, the ill-treatment of the opposition and dissenting opinions, the arbitrary use of power, the superficial glitter and internally hollow economic condition, the submissive foreign policy, the killing of people at the border, and above all, the overall plight of the country troubled Rahul as a politically conscious student.
When the just movement of ordinary students against the quota system turned into a mass anti-discrimination movement due to the government's continuous negligence and repressive policies, Rahul joined the movement as a conscious citizen.
The use of batons on disciplined protesters, tear gas, sound grenades, and shotgun pellets on college and university students, and above all, the large-scale incitement of the peaceful mass movement. The government's internet shutdown, the nationwide curfew, the area-based blackouts at night, and the searches and mass arrests in people's homes exceeded the limits of public tolerance. As a result, the general public, fed up with the misrule of the past 15 years, ignored the bloodshot eyes of the fascist government and took to the streets. They joined the movement of college and university students. The student movement turned into a mass movement.
But the strong public support for the movement could not bring the government to its senses. The government, blinded by the lust for power and looting, used maximum force to suppress the movement. There is no crime that the killer Hasina government and its Awami cohorts did not commit, including stealing corpses from hospital morgues, burning corpses after killing them, mass graves, and using helicopters to shoot and kill their own people. But at one point, when they realized that their time was up, that the people of this Bengal would no longer accept them, they were ready to give a death bite. They began to indiscriminately kill their own people. But even then, they could not suppress the people.
On August 4, Rabiul Islam participated in the anti-discrimination student movement rally. Rahul was with other students in the student movement. After some time in the afternoon, the protesters took position at the hospital intersection in Dinajpur city. The police took position at the municipal railway crossing area. When the police chased the protesters, the protesters took position at the Judge's Court gate. The police opened the Judge's Court gate and started firing continuously with bullets and tear gas. At this time, a tear gas shell from the police landed in front of Rahul. Later, he was injured by police shotgun pellets. He was immediately taken to Dinajpur 250-bed General Hospital. There, doctors removed the bullets from his body. After initial treatment, he returned home. Later, when the injury became infected, he was sent to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital again. When the infection spread, he was transferred to the ICU.
The doctor on duty in the hospital's ICU said that Rahul had pellet marks on his thigh. He also had difficulty breathing. He was admitted unconscious at approximately eight o'clock last Wednesday night. His blood pressure was very low, and he had a fever. A brain infection was detected. He died at approximately 7:15 pm on Friday while undergoing treatment in the ICU at Dinajpur's M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital.
