Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Shaheed Tofazzal Hossain was born on August 17, 1995. His father's name was the late Nikbar Ali, and his mother's name was Momtaz Begum. His home is in Valukjan village, Fulbaria Upazila, Mymensingh district. Tofazzal Hossain was the second of four brothers and two sisters. His younger brother was disabled. Tofazzal was married, and his wife's name is Hamida. The couple has a 10-month-old baby girl named Tashfia. Tofazzal Hossain was a steel building mechanic by profession and worked in Mirpur, Dhaka.
How Tofazzal Hossain Became a Martyr:
Tofazzal Hossain actively participated in the anti-discrimination student-people's movement. On August 5, 2024, a celebratory procession was held in Mirpur, Dhaka, demanding the downfall of the autocratic government. While participating in this procession, he was critically injured by police gunfire at 4 PM. Three bullets hit his head, cheeks, and neck, and two rubber bullets also pierced his body. Tofazzal's family could not contact him since the evening. Later, they learned that after being shot, locals took him to a hospital in Mirpur, where doctors pronounced him dead. His body was then sent to Dhaka Medical College for an autopsy. On the afternoon of August 6, his body was handed over to his family without an autopsy, and he was buried at home.
More Information About Shaheed Tofazzal Hossain:
Tofazzal Hossain was a staunch supporter of Jamaat-e-Islami. He was soft-spoken and loved by everyone in the area. He was always vocal against injustice. His statement, "I will not return from the procession even if I die," shows his strong morale. He was always at the forefront of the '24 anti-discrimination student-people's movement. But his life was extinguished by police bullets. His only child, Tashfia, became an orphan before she could understand what a father is. Tofazzal's wife, Hamida Khatun, said that even after returning home with rubber bullet injuries on the night of August 4, he had said, "If I die, will you take care of my child?"
Their last conversation was around 3 PM on August 5, and although he said he would call at night, he could not keep his promise. Tofazzal's elder brother, Mofazzal Hossain Khan, said that Tofazzal had been participating in the movement from the beginning, and he had seven rubber bullet injuries on his body the day before he was shot. Mofazzal Hossain Khan, the elder brother of Tofazzal Hossain Khan, who was killed by gunfire, filed a case in the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on August 27. The case named 26 people, including Sheikh Hasina, and also made 600 unnamed people accused.
