Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Martyr Md. Saiful Islam (Sekul) was born on January 1, 1987, in the Baraikandi village of Durgapur, Netrokona. His father is Md. Toyeb Ali, and his mother is Rokeya Khatun. Sekul went to Malaysia as an expatriate in pursuit of a livelihood. After a year in Malaysia, he landed at the airport on August 3 at midnight and stayed at a relative's house in Uttara. He participated in processions all day on August 4. On August 5, after lunch, he joined the victory procession.
Context of Martyrdom
Shaheed Saiful Islam Sekul had gone to Malaysia in search of a livelihood. His monthly income was more than 50,000 taka. He could have easily lived a happy life there. Or, even in Bangladesh, he could have kept himself away from movements and struggles. But he did not want to withdraw himself like a selfish person in these troubled times for the country. That's why he participated in the procession the next morning, immediately after landing from the plane at midnight. He did not know when the Hasina government would fall, nor did he know when his beloved motherland, Bangladesh, would be free from autocracy. Yet, he participated in the movement. Relatives, loved ones, and well-wishers were waiting at home, but the country and its people seemed bigger than everything else to him. In this crisis of the country, he gave more importance to the movement than returning to the village. He joined the anti-discrimination student and public movement with his sister on August 4. On August 5, at the moment of victory, Sekul was shot in front of Uttara East Police Station in the capital in the afternoon. He immediately fell to the ground.
Sekul was taken to Uttara Modern Hospital. The doctor on duty there declared him dead. The body was taken to his village home in Baraikandi village, Durgapur Upazila, Netrokona, that night. After the funeral prayers the next morning, he was buried in the family graveyard.
Reactions of the Martyr's Relatives
Lima Akter Rimu, the martyr's younger sister and fellow activist, said, "I saw my brother's death by gunshot in front of my eyes. This scene is unforgettable. We both left the house together, and my brother was shot in front of my eyes. He fell to the ground and died in front of my eyes. I still can't believe that my brother is no more. Everyone is waiting for my brother to return home. There would have been so much joy. But we had to return with my brother's body. I want justice for this murder."
The martyr's mother, Rokeya Khatun, said with a tearful voice, "Sekul called me and said that the situation in Dhaka was very terrible. But don't worry, I will return home soon. I never imagined he would return home like this. He left this world saying he would return home. I want severe punishment for those responsible for this death, and I ask everyone to pray for my son."
