Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Md. Sohag Mia was born on August 1, 2008, in Barokhhapan village, Kamalakanda police station, Netrokona. Martyr Md. Sohag Mia's father, Shafayet Hossain, is a farmer by profession. His mother, Shamla Akter, is a homemaker. Sohag used to drive a rickshaw with his father in Dhaka city. He was the eldest of four siblings. His sister, Suma Akter, is a 12th-grade madrasa student, and his younger brother and sister are Mahadi Hasan (9) and Sohagi Akter (5). On Friday, July 19, 2024, he joined the anti-discrimination student movement. He was injured by pellets fired by the police force loyal to the fascist Hasina government. A bullet entered through his ear and exited through the back of his head. Due to severe bleeding and brain damage, he died on the spot.
Context of Martyrdom
The anti-discrimination student movement started a nationwide mass movement. The government was overwhelmed by protests, rallies, Bengali blockades, and complete shutdowns. The government imposed a curfew to suppress this movement. It is not possible to leave the house during a curfew, but hunger does not stop. That is why working people come out on the streets to buy two handfuls of rice, defying all realities. Md. Sohag Mia was the child of a family that lived from hand to mouth. He went out with his rickshaw, risking his life amidst the movement and struggle.
On Friday, July 19, 2024, after the Friday prayers, at four in the afternoon, he was caught in a surprise attack by the police. In front of Farazi Hospital in Notun Bazar, Dhaka, among numerous pellets, a bullet hit his ear, and he died shortly afterward. Shaheed Sohag Mia passed away, leaving his family in a sea of sorrow.
