Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Sajjad Hossain, a courageous individual, was born on September 18, 1989, to Alamgir Hossain and Shahida Begum in the West Patowarypara area of Syedpur Municipality in Nilphamari. His family had been struggling with poverty from his early childhood. Alamgir Hossain, his father, had once lived on someone else's land before being evicted and relocating to Savar, Dhaka. There, he settled in a rented house near South Kalma, adjacent to Savar Dairy Farm, and supported his family by working as an imam. Sajjad Hossain was the eldest among one brother and three sisters. Before his martyrdom, he was studying in the 7th semester of the Apparel Manufacturing Technology (AMT) Department at Sonargaon University in Narayanganj. He occasionally attended university classes while living in Savar. To support his family, he also worked part-time at a company in Mawna, Gazipur. Just seven months before his martyrdom, he married Sanzida Akter. He had been striving tirelessly to build a perfect life with his beloved wife. Sadly, his dream of a prosperous family was shattered when he was brutally killed by the government-backed hooligans. His wife, now pregnant, is left without his presence. Sajjad was unable to see the face of his unborn child. The dreams and hopes of this 24-year-old warrior were crushed in an instant by those who supported violence and oppression.
Memorial of Martyrdom
Sajjad Hossain was killed by the bullets of the killer police in Savar, Dhaka, during the anti-discrimination movement. He was the only support of his family. Even after several months of his martyrdom, his family members are still overwhelmed by the grief of losing their son.
On August 5, 2024, after finishing his meal in the morning, Sajjad left home to participate in the movement. He led from the front, chanting slogans against the murderer Hasina. Around 10:00 AM, in the Savar bus stand area, he was shot by the police. An unknown person called his younger sister Nishat from Sajjad's phone and informed her that Sajjad had been taken in critical condition to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. The family rushed to the hospital, where they found Sajjad in the ICU. Despite medical efforts, Sajjad passed away at 1:55 PM on August 6, 2024. The first funeral prayer took place in Kalma, Savar, and then his body was taken to his ancestral home in Syedpur. On August 7, around 11:00 AM, a second funeral prayer was held in Syedpur city, after which he was buried at the Hathikhana graveyard.
Family and Neighbors' Opinions
Sajjad's father says, "My son was my only support. Losing him, I am now destitute. My son, Sajjad, had a wish to build a madrasa or mosque. If I ever have the means, I will fulfill his wish." Mr. Mahbub, a neighbor, adds, "Martyr Sajjad was my neighbor. From his childhood, he was a fighter against injustice."
Representative of the anti-discrimination student movement, Ahtesamul Haque Sani, says, "We have been demanding rehabilitation for the martyr's family and the injured from the beginning. In this regard, we have arranged for martyr Sajjad's father to be appointed as the Imam of the municipal mosque. We thank the municipal administrator for this."
Currently, the Syedpur Municipality in Nilphamari has provided employment to the martyr's father. On Monday, November 18, 2024, he was appointed as the Imam of Waqtiya Mosque in the municipality.
