Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Martyr Profile
Sometimes a name becomes more than a person—it becomes history, etched into the collective memory of a nation. The name Asif is one such name. Born in a remote village, he died in the shadowed corners of the capital. Only 23 years old, yet through his sacrifice, Asif has transcended time and entered the eternal narrative of resistance.
Asif was born on October 7, 2001, in Bajit Kha village of Mehendiganj Upazila, Barisal. His father, Maheb Hossain Dewan, was a farmer and a day laborer. But shortly after Asif's birth, his father passed away, leaving his mother, Shahinur Begum, to shoulder the full burden of the family. Today, a framed photo of Asif on the earthen wall of their modest home is all that remains of a life full of promise.
Education and Livelihood
Asif was a second-year student at Patarhati RC College. A quiet, thoughtful young man with dreams burning in his eyes. To support his studies and care for his younger siblings, he worked at a leather refinery in Savar. His mother was a homemaker, and he was the sole provider for his younger brother Asad (14) and sister Shormi (13). Despite the hardship, Asif never complained—his greatest joy was to bring food to the table and a smile to his family’s face. His life was a testament to silent perseverance, where personal dreams were sacrificed for the sake of others.
The Movement and Context
By July 2024, Bangladesh’s streets were aflame with protests. Students and citizens rose in unified dissent against injustice. Although Asif had no formal affiliation with any political group, he was driven by an unwavering love for his country and a moral compass shaped by his mother’s teachings: “To remain silent in the face of injustice is a sin.â€
Martyrdom
On August 5, 2024, a victory rally took place in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area. After the rally, Asif and his companions were returning home on a motorcycle. Unknown to them, members of the ruling student organization were trailing them.
At around 2:00 a.m., a black microbus rammed into their motorcycle. The attackers dragged them out and brutally beat them on the street. Asif was critically injured and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries, becoming yet another martyr in the fight for justice.
Family’s Testimony
His mother, Shahinur Begum, shared in a trembling voice,
“He was my shadow… Since he left, this house has been full of darkness. I am poor, but proud—my son gave his life for this country.â€
His little sister Shormi softly added,
“He used to say, one day our house will be full of light. Now he is that light.â€
