Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Martyr Introduction
Saif Arafat Sarif was born on 10 March 2004 in Kadamir Char village, Araihazar Upazila, Narayanganj district. From early childhood, struggle was his constant companion. Growing up in a family burdened by poverty and with a physically weak father, he had to shoulder responsibility from a young age.
Childhood and Family Background
His father, Kabir Hossain, was physically weak and unable to work, while his mother, Morium Begum, was a homemaker who stood by him in every hardship. Saif was the only hope for his two younger sisters. One sister said, “Our brother was the beloved of the whole family. Without him, our family is shattered. Though we live, we are not well.â€
Work and Life Struggle
To support the family, Saif began working online in a business named “Evicon.†He lived with his mother in a rented house near Madina Mosque lane in Jatrabari, Dhaka. He was responsible for all household expenses and was the lifeblood of the family.
A Brave Fighter in the Movement
During the unprecedented mass uprising in July-August 2024, waves of protest spread across cities and suburbs. Among the courageous youth who took a stand against inequality was Saif Arafat. Even after victory, he did not rest. Along with friends, he helped control morning traffic and kept night vigil near the police station, dedicating himself to community service.
A Bloody Night
On the afternoon of 13 August, near Jatrabari Police Station, a group of 15-20 disguised Chhatra League militants appeared. They posed as helpers to the police but had sinister motives. They targeted Saif Arafat Sarif and martyr Saidul Islam Yasin for their leadership roles among the students. Most students left late at night, but Saif and a few others stayed back.
At around 3:30 AM, Saif called home, saying, “I will be back early morning, don’t worry, Mom.†Between 5:00 and 6:00 AM, while returning from buying water at a shop, Saif and Yasin were suddenly attacked. The militants brutally beat Saif, causing severe injuries to multiple parts of his body, and left him unconscious near the police station.
Final Moments
In the morning, an unknown caller informed Saif’s mother that her son had been beaten and left near the police station. Morium Begum rushed to the station and broke down seeing her son’s condition. He was first taken to a private hospital locally, but as his condition worsened, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On 14 August 2024, at 10:15 AM, Saif Arafat Sarif passed away. When his lifeless body was held in his mother’s arms, silence filled the air. The bloodied youth had gone silent forever.
Economic Background: Grief and Reality
The death of this young martyr plunged his family into deep darkness. As the sole breadwinner, his loss left the family directionless. His mother’s heart is empty, and his two sisters are now brotherless. Without a permanent home or income, the mother said with pride and worry, “My son died for the country. I am proud, but how will my family survive?â€
