Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

"Father, if I become a martyr, bury me next to my grandfather's grave."
The 5th of August, 2024, marked a rare example in the world with the unprecedented mass uprising of students and the people, and the end of the Awami fascist rule. Against the backdrop of this massive public awakening, the long-standing discontent of the people against the arbitrariness and corruption of the Sheikh Hasina-led government exploded. School and college students actively participated in this uprising, among whom Shaheed Md. Sawant Mehtab Priyo was a prominent figure.
Priyo, a resident of Mujib Road in Jessore Sadar, was born on April 5, 2006. He was an HSC science student at Government City College, Jessore. He was known to everyone for getting a GPA of 5 in the SSC exam and for helping countless people in humanitarian work. Priyo's father's name is Md. Shakil Wahid. He is a homeopathic doctor; he runs a homeopathy clinic in the Railgate area of Jessore. His mother, Rehena Parveen, is a housewife. The family is relatively well-off, and Priyo always played a leading role in helping people.
Description of the Martyrdom Incident
July month. The oppression and discrimination of the autocratic Awami government have reached extreme limits. The Awami syndicate is so prevalent in all spheres that public life has become unbearable. Corruption has reached such a peak that the cry for a job is like the pain of death for a young man. The discrimination in the name of quota is like adding insult to injury for young people.
The killer Hasina unleashed Awami Chhatra League terrorists on the students' movement demanding logical reforms to the quota system. They violently attacked female students and bloodied them on various campuses. The movement intensified. The Awami terrorist forces became reckless. The autocratic government came down to kill the students with domestic and firearms. The police and Awami terrorist forces united and amidst brutal repression, the movement intensified further.
The movement spread throughout Bangladesh. In its continuation, along with the anti-discrimination student movement, the general public took to the streets across Jessore city. Thousands of people took to the streets demanding the resignation of the killer fascist Hasina and an apology. On the 5th, after the fall of the autocrat, Shaheed Priyo participated in the victory procession. Priyo had been involved in the student movement throughout July from the very beginning. He left home with 40 Taka from his father, saying he would be back by 7 o'clock.
Priyo joined the victory procession with his friends, and upon hearing the news of the arson attack by miscreants at the Zabeer Hotel in Jessore city, Priyo went there with his friends.
Arriving at the front of Zabeer Hotel, he wanted to go inside the hotel to try to save a child. A friend of his present at the scene said, "Don't go inside, there is a lot of smoke inside." Ignoring his friend's words, he went inside and at one point got trapped there. Meanwhile, as it got dark after afternoon and he didn't return home, his parents became worried and called him, but his phone was switched off. Priyo always used to receive his parents' calls at the first or second ring, but this time, not receiving it, they became even more panicked. After contacting Priyo's friends, they could not find any trace of Priyo and later, with the help of friends, Priyo's parents found his body at Jessore Sadar Hospital. His immense love for the country and its people was the inspiration for this movement and his sacrifice of life. Just 12 days before his death, Priyo had told his parents, "Dad, if I become a martyr, bury me next to my grandfather's grave." According to his words, Priyo was buried next to his grandfather's grave in the local Karbala graveyard.
Relatives' Feelings/Expressions
Shaheed Priyo's father, Mr. Shakil Wahid, said, "Priyo was involved in humanitarian work from his childhood. He used to donate blood to people and taking them to the hospital when they were sick was his regular work. He often brought patients to my chamber. He would tell me to treat them for free. He always served people in times of danger. He would take money from his mother and donate it to the poor. He always told his mother, 'Look, I will do something that a road, a building will be named after me.' Our Priyo used to pray regularly. He would cry talking about Mugdho and Abu Sayeed. He would say, 'Look, such a good brother has been martyred.' Such a restless boy, he was very forgetful. He couldn't even tie his shoelaces. My younger son used to tie his shoelaces. One day I asked Priyo what his post was in the movement, he said, 'I don't need a post, rather I give posts.'"
Priyo used to tell his parents, "You have 2 more children. If parents like you were there in '71, the country would not have been independent." His favorite food was egg and white rice. He would start eating by saying Bismillah and finish by saying Alhamdulillah.
His favorite food was egg and white rice.”
