Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Abdullah, a brilliant student, was the son of Abdul Jabbar, a day laborer from Mathpara village, Bara Achra, under Benapole Port Police Station in Jessore. His mother was Mabia Begum. He had three brothers and one sister, and Abdullah was the youngest. He was a third-year student in the Department of Political Science at Shaheed Suhrawardy College in the capital. From the very beginning of the anti-discrimination movement, Abdullah was actively involved. His last wish remained unfulfilled—he could not complete his studies, secure a job, and take responsibility for his parents. Despite his parents staying by his side in the hospital for more than three months, they could not save him. On Thursday, November 14, the brilliant student passed away at (Combined Military Hospital) CMH, Dhaka. His death cast a shadow of grief over his home in Bara Achra and the entire Benapole region.
Background of the Martyrdom
The Hasina government aimed to stay in power uninterruptedly until 2041. To achieve this, A. K. M. Mozammel Haque facilitated the issuance of fake freedom fighter certificates to party leaders and activists, ensuring their recruitment into government jobs. Mozammel Haque was an infamous Awami League activist during Mujib's era, involved in robbery, looting, kidnapping, rape, and various other crimes in the Gazipur area. Anthoney Mascarenhas, in his book The Rape of Bangladesh, documented an incident where Mozammel and his associates attacked a groom’s car, murdered the groom, and raped the bride. Despite such heinous crimes, Sheikh Mujib rewarded him instead of punishing him. Similarly, Sheikh Hasina filled her ministry with corrupt, alcoholic, secular, and pro-India individuals.
Hasina sought to permanently secure her power by recruiting her party workers through a quota system. However, brilliant students protested against this injustice. From July 16 to July 21, police, RAB, and BGB launched a brutal crackdown on protesting students and citizens. Awami League terrorists assisted them in this atrocity. The level of barbarity was beyond words. The streets, buildings, trees, sky, and air all bore witness to this brutality.
During the movement, a video surfaced showing a young protester hanging from a building ledge to escape police fire. A policeman shot him three times at close range, followed by another policeman firing three more rounds. Another protester lay wounded on the street; when someone attempted to rescue him, police shot him too. Ninth-grade student Imam Hossain Taim also joined the protest with his friends. His father, Aynal Hossain, was a sub-inspector at Rajarbagh Police Lines. Unable to find his son all day, he rushed to Dhaka Medical College. There, in the morgue, he found his son’s lifeless, bullet-ridden body. In tears, he called someone and asked, "Sir, my son is dead. His chest is riddled with bullets. Sir, my son is no more. How many bullets does it take to kill one person, sir?"
On August 5, as Hasina fled, the people rejoiced in the streets. Murals and statues of Sheikh Mujib, built with millions of takas, were destroyed. The people took control of the Gono Bhaban and the Parliament House.
Abdullah, a dedicated activist in the student movement, joined the celebrations, wrapping a flag around his head. He declared, "This country belongs to us! We, the new generation, will rebuild it. No more dictators will rule here!"
Even those close to Sheikh Hasina admitted that she was mentally unstable and capable of extreme acts of vengeance. Matiur Rahman Rentu, a former freedom fighter, described her in his book Amar Fashi Chai. Sohail Taj, son of former Awami League leader Tajuddin Ahmed, also spoke about Hasina’s mental instability in an interview.
However, the people were unaware that even though Hasina and her corrupt leaders had fled, they left behind a vicious police force. The police, firing their last bullets, indiscriminately shot at students and civilians. On August 5, around 7 PM, Abdullah was shot near Tantibazar intersection in front of Bangshal police station. He was taken to Mitford Hospital, then to Dhaka Medical College, where a bullet was surgically removed from his head. Despite his critical condition, the hospital forcibly discharged him on August 10.
Abdullah’s Final Days
His family took him back to Benapole, but his condition worsened. On the night of August 11, they admitted him to Khulna Medical College Hospital. As his situation deteriorated further, doctors advised transferring him back to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. On August 12 at 7 AM, he was admitted again. Doctors detected a severe infection inside his head, causing liquid plasma-like fluid to ooze out. He underwent another surgery, but his condition did not improve. On August 22, he was transferred to CMH Dhaka, where he finally passed away while under treatment.
Family’s Financial Condition
Abdullah worked hard to pursue his education. His talent and good nature made him beloved in his village. He was known as a brilliant student in the area. No one expected Abdullah to leave this world so soon. His friends and classmates still cannot accept that he is gone.
Testimony from Family
Abdullah’s father, Abdul Jabbar, is a laborer. Due to financial constraints, he could not educate his other children. However, Abdullah, being extremely talented, pursued his studies despite hardships. He was the youngest of four siblings. His parents and siblings had high hopes for him, dreaming that he would one day support the family. His death devastated them completely.
