Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
After Bangladesh gained independence, several governments changed one after another. But no government could understand the language of the country, the nation, and the general population's hearts. As a result, those who were in power became oppressive rulers instead of servants of the people. Inequality in the state increased to such an extent that it became almost a dysfunctional organization. In the fight against this, innocent people like Md. Ashraful had to give their lives. He was born on September 13, 1987, illuminating the laps of his father, Kafil Uddin, and mother, Mosammat Nazma Khatun. His home is in Shaldah village under Kushtia Sadar police station. His childhood was spent with the immense love of his parents.
Born into a poor family, Md. Ashraful could not advance much in his studies. In a family of seven, including four brothers and one sister, life was somehow going on with the limited income of his father. To give the family a little happiness, he took a job at Atiar Metal Industries Limited Company. At the beginning of his youth, he got married to a girl named Laboni Akhter Eti. Later, he lived in a small house on his wife's land at his in-laws' house. They have a nine-year-old son and a four-year-old daughter. Despite the hardship, he was very devoted to religion. He always cherished the desire for martyrdom.
How he was martyred
Although Shaheed Md. Ashraful Islam was of a gentle and polite nature, he never bowed down to injustice. He longed for the elimination of all kinds of inequality from society. When the anti-discrimination student movement started, he welcomed it. But to suppress this movement, first the killer Chhatra League and later the police and BGB were deployed. They tried to suppress this movement by firing indiscriminately. He could not bear to see the death of a child who participated in the movement on 04/08/2024. That day, after returning home from the office, he said to his wife, "How could the police kill this child? I will give the police a proper reply." Saying this, as soon as he went out of the house with a stick, his wife came in front and said, "Don't go. What will happen to us if something happens to you?"
Due to his wife's obstruction and crying, he could not go on the 4th. The next day, on the 5th, while helping his wife with cooking, he said, "If I go to the movement and embrace martyrdom, will you not marry someone else?" His wife said, "No." "Then take good care of the two children," he said, and ignoring his wife's prevention, he joined the anti-discrimination student movement. During the movement, the police, led by the Sadar police station's Daroga Saheb Ali, fired indiscriminately at the students and the public. Around 1 o'clock, some shotgun pellets from the police of the fascist, autocratic Sheikh Hasina government hit Ashraful's lower abdomen. He collapsed there instantly. When he was rescued and quickly taken to the Sadar Hospital, the doctor on duty declared him dead around 3 o'clock. Then, after the bath and funeral prayers that day, he was buried in the Hotsh Haripur Central Eidgah Graveyard. His comrades lost a pioneer of the lifelong cherished dream of establishing a discrimination-free society. The country lost an intelligent young man.
