Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Md. Usama was a young man inspired by the desire for martyrdom. His dream was to rid Bangladesh of the fascist autocracy and establish a golden society of Islam. He proved this by sacrificing his life in the way of Allah. He was a leading soldier in establishing a just society against injustice. He was born on March 3, 2008, in a traditional Muslim family in Dahkula village under Kushtia Sadar police station, the traditional district of Bangladesh. He was the third of four siblings. His elder sister, Sumaiya Khatun, is married. His elder brother, Mahmudul Hasan, works in a private company. And his younger brother, Khalid, studies in a madrasa. As his father was the imam of the local mosque, he somewhat fondly named his third child Usama.
He believed that this child of his would one day become a brave hero. From childhood, he was extremely honest, devout, and benevolent. He was also very talented in studies. He had just passed Dakhil and got admitted to the Alim class at Quatul Ulum Kamil Madrasa. He left a mark of his talent at every stage of his academic life. He took responsibility for the social work of the area. If he came to know that a child from a poor family was having trouble getting married due to lack of money, he would arrange for the money. He was a member of a blood bank in Kushtia. If anyone in the area needed blood, he would arrange it. He also helped his parents with household chores.
When his mother fell ill, he cooked for almost two to three months and arranged food for the family members. He always cherished the desire for martyrdom. Along with his studies, the terrible state of society always pained him. He dreamed of changing this picture of injustice, crime, thuggery, hooliganism, and a fascist and autocratic society. The anti-discrimination student movement appeared before him as a ray of hope. He actively participated in this movement with the student community of the area. With the full support of his family, he was able to play the role of a brave hero from the beginning to the end of this movement. At the verge of victory, on 05/08/2024, his chest was riddled with bullets in the combined attack and continuous firing of the Awami police and the Chhatra League goons. With Usama's martyrdom, a rising golden rose fell from the face of the earth.
How He Was Martyred
Nationwide injustice and discrimination and the terrorism of the Chhatra League had gripped educational institutions and all other places. It was unknown to anyone that any student organization in the world could be so dangerous, infamous, and vile. The Chhatra League is used as a vanguard force in support of all the misdeeds of the fascist Awami League. The witch Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has turned the entire country into a land of discrimination and terror. As a result, the student community became vocal in protest against all these misdeeds. They formed the anti-discrimination student movement. Later, people from all walks of life joined. Shaheed Usama participated in this movement from the very beginning. On 05/08/2024, the day of the autocratic government's downfall, Usama left home around twelve o'clock. He participated in the anti-discrimination student movement at Saddam Bazar in Kushtia city.
When the student and people's procession reached NS Road from there, the police and terrorist Awami League and the killer Chhatra League leaders started firing indiscriminately at the students and the people. The courageous hero Usama, ignoring the fear of bullets, reached Mujib Chattar when a targeted bullet from the Awami police hit Usama in the back. The bullet entered the upper part of his back and exited through the right side of his neck. He immediately fell to the ground. His fellow students and people rescued him and took him to Ad-Din Hospital by motorcycle. But the doctor on duty declared Usama dead. Thus, a fresh life was lost. The word "martyr" was added to Usama's name. Usama, who selflessly sacrificed his life against discrimination, will remain illuminated in the hearts of millions of people.
Statements from Close Relatives and Neighbors about the Martyr
Shaheed Md. Usama was very dear to all the members of his family, relatives, and neighbors. His father, expressing his feelings, said, "My dear Usama was the most honest and devout among my children. He used to go to the movement every day. I never forbade him; rather, I encouraged him to be at the forefront of the procession. On the 5th, he returned to my house as a martyr. I am not sad that Usama is a martyr; rather, I am proud to be the father of a martyr. I sent my son to the movement to oust the autocrat Hasina. May Allah accept his martyrdom." His friend Mujahidul Islam said, "We have lost an honest, brave, and God-fearing friend."
Family's Economic Condition
By the grace of Allah, the family of six members, consisting of parents and four siblings, was living fairly well. The family's expenses were met by his father's imamat (profession of leading prayers) at the mosque, his elder brother's job in a private company, and a portion of the income from land. With Usama's martyrdom in the anti-discrimination student movement, a shadow of grief descended upon the family. The atmosphere became heavy with his mother's wails. They have prayed that Allah may grant his father the strength to bear the weight of his son's coffin.
