Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Martyr Biplob Sheikh was born in Buri Gangni village, Mollar Hat police station, Bagerhat district. He was the eldest son of a poor van driver, Md. Parvez Sheikh, and his mother, Eliza Begum. Due to the family's poor financial condition, his parents could not provide him with much formal education, but they did ensure he was literate. He inherited his moral character from his father. His humane qualities, such as rejoicing in others' happiness and feeling pain for others' sorrow, developed in his childhood. He learned from his father the importance of earning money for the family and spending it for their well-being.
He was a very simple and humble person. He was very obedient and peaceful towards his parents. Due to the poor economic condition of his family, he joined a garment factory as an ironing man at a young age. The expenses for the education of his younger siblings came from his salary.
Incident of Martyrdom
Friday, July 19, 2024. A holy Jummah day. From dawn, the situation in Dhaka and the rest of Bangladesh was tense. Unlike other days, clashes between the police and the students/public had not yet occurred. As it was Friday, the students and the public were preparing to take to the streets after the Jummah prayers. People from various walks of life expressed solidarity with the college, university, and madrasa students. They also played a key role in this movement. Biplob Sheikh was a garment worker, and his plan for that day was to join the movement with his friends, as he had done on other days. Accordingly, Biplob Sheikh finished the Jummah prayers and went down to Mirpur 10 with his friends and the general public and students.
Earlier, on July 16, the government began a massacre in the name of suppressing the movement by martyring six people, including Abu Sayeed, Faisal Mahmud Shanto, and Wasim Akram.
On July 19, there were the most clashes between the police and the public in Dhaka and outside Dhaka. Compared to other places in Dhaka, the clashes were a bit more intense in Mirpur-10 because there, along with the police, the Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Awami League jointly attacked the students and the public. Immediately after the prayers, chases and counter-chases began between the two groups. Along with the chases and counter-chases, the police's intermittent firing continued at the same pace. At the same time, hot water was dropped from helicopters in the sky by the government. At one point in the chase and counter-chase between the police and the students/public, two consecutive bullets hit Biplob Sheikh, one in the back of his head and the other in his back, and he fell on the spot. Later, when his companions took him to Ajmal Hospital, the doctor on duty declared Biplob Sheikh dead. While the family was taking his body from the hospital, the police told his father to tell people that he had died after being hit by a train.
Family's Economic Condition
Biplob Sheikh's father is a van driver. His mother works in other people's homes, and the income she earns is also used to run the household along with her husband's earnings. Besides Biplob Sheikh, these parents have three more children. It is very difficult for them to run the family while covering the children's education expenses. This family, which earns on a daily basis, is currently in a very precarious financial condition. The hope was that the eldest son, Biplob Sheikh, would work in the garment factory and support the family as well as bear the educational expenses of his younger siblings. This was also Biplob Sheikh's intention.
Losing their eldest child, Biplob Sheikh's parents are almost distraught. Nothing remains of their hopes and aspirations centered around their son. With the loss of their son, who was the family's support as a garment worker, the family has been plunged into poverty and hardship.
