Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
"Mom, let me go. If I die, your heart will be filled with pride knowing your son is a martyr."
Teenager Martyr Alif Ahmed Siam was born on August 31, 2009, in Bashbaria village, Bagerhat Sadar police station. He was a 10th-grade student at Savar Dairy Farm High School. His younger sister, Ishrat Jahan Lamha, is a 6th-grade student. He lived with his parents and younger sister in a rented house in the Islamnagar area of Savar. He aspired to be a pilot and join the aviation sector. But his dream was shattered when he was killed by police gunfire in Savar on August 5th. Alif was very simple and straightforward. He was a very obedient and quiet son to his parents.
Due to the poor economic condition of his family, he did not ask his family for much, even though he had his own needs. From the money he was given for tiffin, he would spend half and return the other half to his mother. He helped his younger sister with her studies, and seeing his father's hardship, he helped him with his work. He would tell his mother, "When I grow up, Inshallah, I will remove all your financial difficulties." He had a very good relationship with the people of the area, so everyone loved him very much. There was a needy boy next door whom he would regularly give food from his own house without telling his mother, fearing that his mother might get angry if she saw it. Because Alif himself knew that their family was struggling financially. He also had an excellent relationship with the older brothers at Jahangirnagar University, which is why one of the three funeral prayers was held at Jahangirnagar University.
Incident of Martyrdom
From the day the quota reform movement started, Alif seemed somewhat distracted, with no interest in studies. Alif repeatedly went in front of the TV and fidgeted. Then, the first day he heard that the older brothers of Jahangirnagar University had called for a movement, he started going to the movement. Alif and his father went to the quota reform movement every day. Even though Alif's mother forbade him, his father took him with him and encouraged him. One day, while participating in the movement at Jahangirnagar University, Alif was hit in the hand with rubber bullets and tear gas in his eyes. Seeing this, his mother cried and subsequently did not allow him to go to the movement anymore. Then he said to his mother, "Mom, let me go. If I die, your heart will be filled with pride knowing your son is a martyr." Then, when the announcement of the long march program to Dhaka came on August 5th, Alif's mother could no longer hold him back. When Alif's friends came to their house, Alif left the house saying, "I won't go too far." While leaving, Alif's mother gave him a mobile phone, and Alif also spoke to his mother around 11 o'clock.
At 12:10, when he called, Alif told his mother, "Mom, we are going towards Ganabhaban, don't worry. Inshallah, nothing will happen to me, and even if something does happen to me, I will be a martyr, and you will be a martyr's mother." His mother said, "I don't want to be a martyr's mother, you come home right now, son." Then Alif says, "You pray for me, Mom, so that the purpose for which we have come may be successful and I can return to you victoriously." He hung up the phone without saying anything else. After a while, when the shooting started in Savar, Alif's mother became terrified. At around 2:30, Alif's mother received a call from an unknown number that Alif had been shot in the head. Alif was taken to Labzone Hospital and from there to Enam Medical College. He was kept on ICU support at Enam Medical. The battle between life and death continued for two days. Finally, on August 7th, at 6 pm, Alif Ahmed Siam passed away. He drank the nectar of martyrdom. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.
Statements of his Relatives about the Martyr
Assalamu Alaikum, I am Alif Ahmed Siam's mother. My son Alif Ahmed was a science student in the tenth grade at Dairy Farm School. I cannot speak in front of the camera, yet today I will say something about my father's real life. My father had the courage of a hero. The story of my father's heroic courage I must tell today.
I did not see the Language Movement of '52, I did not see the Liberation War of '71, but I have seen the quota reform movement of July 2024. I have seen heroic freedom fighters like Abu Sayeed, Mugdha, Srabon, and Alif. I have seen the deep love for the country in their hearts, the infinite courage to give their lives for the country. I want everyone involved in my son's murder to be brought to justice.
My son had many dreams, and they were snatched away in an instant. I demand justice for his murder.
Siam's father, Bulbul Kabir, who runs a clothing store near Jahangirnagar University, said, "Siam was a brilliant student and sports champion in his school. With the dream of becoming a pilot, he chose the science group. He worked hard, won numerous awards. I cannot accept this kind of ending for him."
Bulbul also mentioned that Supreme Court lawyer Gazi MH Tamim has filed a case on his behalf in the International Criminal Tribunal against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and eight others on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity from July 15 to August.
Description of the Family's Economic Condition
Alif Ahmed Siam was a tenth-grade student. His father, Bulbul Ahmed, lives in Savar. Initially, Bulbul Ahmed worked at Sundarban Courier Service for a salary of five thousand taka. As the office was in Motijheel, he found it difficult to commute from Savar to Motijheel, so he started a small business selling clothes on a van. The small business closed down during the Covid period. To earn a living, he then supplied food to various houses and halls of Jahangirnagar University. Currently, he has started the business of selling clothes on a van again, from which he earns eight to ten thousand taka monthly. Alif Ahmed Siam used to help his father in these matters.
