Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Abul Bashar Adam is one of the martyrs of the mass uprising of 2024. He was born on June 10, 2006, in Kalyanpur village, Ashashuni police station, Satkhira district, to a day laborer father, Noor Hakim Gharami (65), and a housewife mother, Shahanara (55). Shaheed Abul Bashar Adam was a student of APS Degree College. On August 5, when the victory of the students and the general public was achieved, like the rest of the country, a victory procession was held in Pratapnagar Bazar, Ashashuni police station, Satkhira. When armed Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders opened fire on the joyous procession, Abul Bashar Adam was shot and martyred among many others who were injured.
Personal Life
Shaheed Abul Bashar Adam was an eleventh-grade student at APS Degree College. His day laborer father, Noor Hakim Gharami, struggles to make ends meet. The large family of three sons and one daughter lives in extreme hardship. Moreover, everyone studies in school and college. Shaheed Abul Bashar's brother, Md. Chanchal Hossain, is studying in the eleventh grade at Pratapnagar College, and Billal Hossain and his sister, Sufia Khatun, are students of the tenth and ninth grades respectively.
How Abul Bashar Adam Became a Martyr
Pratapnagar Bazar is a market in the southern district of Satkhira, Bangladesh. The news of the victory of the students and the general public in the mass uprising on August 5 took some time to reach there. It was 4 pm. Immediately, a victory procession was organized. The procession reached Pratapnagar Bazar in Ashashuni police station, Satkhira. More people joined the procession in the market. Thousands of people. As the procession advanced from the market, armed Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders, led by Pratapnagar Upazila Chairman and Awami League leader Sheikh Zakir Hossain, opened fire on the procession. Many were injured in this. Shaheed Abul Bashar Adam was also shot. He was taken to the hospital where the doctor declared him dead.
Tearful Words of Abul Bashar Adam's Father
Abul Bashar Adam was self-confident, brave, and affectionate at the same time. His words were serious and balanced, which demonstrated his intelligence. No one can forget that cheerful face which made him known and loved by everyone. He maintained his friendship with his brothers. When he was given a task, he was interested in the accuracy of the time allotted for the task and paid special attention to the work. Abul Bashar is my heart, my life. How will I live without him now? I have lost such a good son! However, even after losing my son, I am happy because after 16 long years, the autocratic Sheikh Hasina government of Bangladesh has fallen. In the history of the world, my son will be immortalized as a martyr. But Sheikh Hasina will be known by people as a terrorist and mass murderer. I want justice for the murder of my beloved Abul Bashar Adam. May the current government first bring to justice those who killed my son and other innocent students across the country.
His Brother's Reaction about the Martyr
Chanchal Hossain, the younger brother of Shaheed Abul Bashar Adam, says, “Whenever he got a chance, he would run to the field with a football. He would go to play football for the school, for the college, for the village. His joy knew no bounds when he won the game. The poverty of the family, even Dad's scolding, did not disturb him a bit. He was a bit stubborn. He was with the movement from the very beginning. But we could never have imagined that this would be his fate after the procession. We will never get our brother back. But we want justice for those murderers. Mom and Dad are completely broken."
Family's Economic Condition
Shaheed Abul Bashar Adam's father, Noor Hakim Gharami, is a day laborer by profession. They do not have any land of their own. But there were six members in the family. Now there are five. Yet the only breadwinner of the family is the martyr's father, Noor Hakim Gharami. Moreover, the martyr's mother has also been ill for a long time. She cannot help with any household work. Besides, Noor Hakim Gharami's sons and daughters are all studying in school and college. The martyr's father, Noor Hakim Gharami, is constantly struggling to meet the household expenses and the educational expenses of his children.
