Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
It would not be an exaggeration to call the July movement a "teenage rebellion." Nearly 70 children and adolescents were martyred in this movement. One such rebellious teenager was Shaheed Ahad Ali. The final culmination of the anti-discrimination movement came in August. The movement, which started from Dhaka University, gradually turned into a comprehensive movement. On August 3, 2024, millions of young men and women, teachers, students, scholars, and freedom-seeking people of all classes and professions gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka. Everyone's eyes and faces were filled with hatred and sharp slogans of protest against the Awami misrule. Everyone was united in the same demand: the Awami League government must be driven out by any means.
On August 3, the bands held a protest program "Get Up Stand Up" at Rabindra Sarobar. At 3 pm, they came to the Shaheed Minar to express solidarity. They had to endure a lot of hardship to reach the Shaheed Minar. On the way, the artists faced obstacles from armed Chhatra League, Jubo League, and police. Based on public demand, a nationwide non-cooperation movement was announced that day. The non-cooperation movement started on August 4. This movement spread to 64 districts. There were widespread clashes in the Sadar, Sreepur, and Mohammadpur upazilas of Magura district. A total of four people were martyred in the attacks by police and Awami terrorists.
Among them was Shaheed Md. Ahad Ali. Shaheed Ahad Ali was born on August 7, 2007, in Mohammadpur. His father, Md. Yusuf Ali, is a van driver, and his mother, Pakhi Khatun, was a housewife. Shaheed Md. Ahad Ali passed the Dakhil examination from Mohammadpur Barkatia Dakhil Madrasa and got admitted to the eleventh grade at the renowned Aminur Rahman Degree College in Mohammadpur in the 2024-2025 academic year. Shaheed Ahad Ali was a regular first-year student in the humanities department. His younger brother, Md. Ishaq Ali, is a 5th-grade student at Muhammadpur Government Primary School.
How He Was Martyred
The student-public movement demanding quota reform spread rapidly across the country. Gradually, the general public began to unite with this demand. At one point, this anti-discrimination movement turned into the demand of everyone's hearts. Shaheed Ahad Ali encouraged his friends to join the anti-autocracy protest march of students and the public, and every day at college, he would unite everyone and inspire them on when and how to join the march.
On August 4, 2024, at 11 am, he, along with his classmates and friends, participated in a protest march on the main road in front of Aminur Rahman Degree College, located next to Mohammadpur police station in Magura district. After a while, when the Mohammadpur police arrested 4 students from the peaceful protest march, the protest march turned into a protest rally. A large number of students and the public came and joined the rally from all sides. The protesters repeatedly requested the police to release the arrested students, but instead of releasing them, the police started firing tear gas and bullets at the student-public rally. Many students and members of the public were seriously injured by the bullets.
At one point, due to public resistance, the police fled the police station. The general public besieged the police station and brought out the arrested students from the police station's lockup. Later, the general public rescued the injured and admitted them to the local hospital. At 1 pm, the doctor declared Shaheed Ahad Ali dead while he was undergoing treatment. The people of all walks of life in Mohammadpur were stunned with grief at the loss of their beloved Ahad Ali.
On the morning of August 5, Shaheed Ahad Ali's funeral was completed. Thousands of people participated in the funeral. They wept, remembering Shaheed Ahad Ali. After the funeral, Shaheed Ahad Ali was laid to rest forever in the local family graveyard. His classmates were overwhelmed with grief at the death of their beloved Ahad Ali. The blood-stained cap and Panjabi of Shaheed Ahad Ali still carry the memory of the martyr. In this movement, the participation of all people with Islamic ideals was spontaneous. The students studying in madrasas were like a "Bunyanun Marsus" or a "solid wall." That is why this movement will continue to be discussed as a wonder of the world.
