himself in history by becoming a martyr. He made these rights a reality by sacrificing his life for the common people's rightful rights. He will be remembered as an exceptional hero for many decades to come.
Details of Martyrdom
On January 25, 1987, in the 1/5 East Ganeshpur village under Kotwali police station in Rangpur district, this brave hero was born. He was the 6th among his siblings and grew up in a middle-class family. With the support of his family, he had the opportunity to study until the 10th grade. From a young age, he was very hardworking. At an early age, he joined his father's profession as a goldsmith. Along with that, he also took responsibility for the family's livelihood. He worked at a jewelry shop on Dewanbari Road in the city.
In his married life, he became the father of two children. His elder son Bayezid is a 7th-grade student, and his younger son Tamjid is studying at a Hifz Madrasa. On July 19, 2024, Moslem Uddin Milon was martyred in a police shooting during a student protest against discriminatory practices.
How He Answered the Call of God
Moslem Uddin had supported the movement for the reform of the discriminatory quota system in government jobs from the beginning. His emotional nature always motivated him to participate in the movement. The first martyr of the anti-discrimination movement was a young man from his own district, Rangpur. Unarmed Abu Sayeed was shot by police during a live broadcast, an incident he could not accept. He repeatedly watched that video at home and said, "What was the crime of that boy? We must protest against this." After witnessing the loss of so many young lives, he hoped that the government would understand and address the students' legitimate demands to facilitate due reform in the quota system. However, despite the government's verbal assurances, the police did not stop shooting. As a result, the number of martyrs continued to rise. On July 16, 17, and 18, the number of martyrs surpassed a hundred. By July 19, he could not stay at home any longer.
On that Friday, July 19, 2024, after Jumma prayers, students and the public took to the streets across the country, and Rangpur was no exception. After offering Jumma prayers and having lunch, Moslem Uddin Milon joined the student movement against discrimination around 4 PM. As the procession progressed, a clash broke out between the police and the protesters. The police unjustly fired tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition at the unarmed crowd. In the chaos, a bullet from the police struck Moslem Uddin Milon directly in the chest. He collapsed in front of Muri Patti, near the municipal market. Eyewitnesses report that he died on the spot. He was later taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Around 8 PM that night, his body was handed over to his family without an autopsy. The next day, on Saturday, his body was buried at the Munshipara Graveyard after the funeral prayer at 3 PM.
Fifty-eight days later, on September 15, his body was exhumed for an investigation, in the presence of the Assistant Commissioner of Rangpur Sadar, the investigating officer, law enforcement, and the family. Executive Magistrate Ahmed Sadat stated that the body was exhumed in accordance with a court order for a proper investigation, and the body was sent for autopsy at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
On August 27, the wife of the martyr, Dilruba Akter, filed a murder case naming 17 people, including former Member of Parliament and Speaker of the National Parliament, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury.
Statements/Feelings from Relatives and Friends
1. Rubayet Al Khair, a neighbor of the martyr, mentioned that Moslem Uddin led a simple life. He had no enmity or quarrels with anyone in the locality. He was a friendly person with a deep bond with children and was always humble in fulfilling his responsibilities.
2. The martyr’s uncle, Badal Islam, said that Moslem Uddin was very affectionate toward younger ones. He often organized get-togethers with his younger siblings, nephews, and children. These memories are all we have now. He will never return to us.
They say, "We demand justice for this murder. Our only prayer to Allah is to accept him as a martyr and grant him the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus. We also urge everyone to help the martyr’s family. There are two orphaned children in this family. Please look after their future."
Family's Financial Situation
The martyr’s family consists of 4 members. He was supporting his family by managing a jewelry shop. His elder son is in the 7th grade, and his younger son is studying at a Hifz Madrasa. Currently, managing the expenses for his children's education and the family’s daily needs has become extremely difficult. Moslem Uddin had started building a house on his ancestral land and had taken some loans for it, but the construction remains incomplete.
After his martyrdom, it has become increasingly difficult for his family to manage. As the sole breadwinner is no more, the entire family is now in distress. The future of the two orphaned children is uncertain.
