Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
The student-public uprising of 2024 spread across Bangladesh, even reaching the northern border district of Lalmonirhat. One of the martyrs from this district was Hafiz Mohammad Azizul Islam. He was born in the village of Jhalangi, Patgram Thana, Lalmonirhat. He was the only son of farmer Mohammad Abdur Rahim (51) and housewife Mosammat Rezia Khatun (43). On the evening of August 5th, the day of victory, Azizul was martyred due to electrocution at 6:00 PM.
Personal Life
Azizul Islam was a 10th-grade student at Awliyarhat Kazi Nizamia Dakhil Madrasa. Prior to this, he completed his Hifz (Quran memorization) at Jamia Rashidia Islamia Madrasa. He was the eldest son of Mohammad Abdur Rahim's second wife and the Shaheed Hafiz Mohammad Azizul Islam. He became a Hafiz of the Quran at the age of just 12. He was well-known in the area as a young Islamic preacher and was often invited to deliver speeches at religious gatherings. He aimed to inspire people to join the Islamic movement.
How He Became a Martyr
On August 5th, during the anti-discrimination movement, a call was made for the student and public to take to the streets, and people from across the country responded. Students from Awliyarhat Kazi Nizamia Dakhil Madrasa also joined the movement. A gathering took place at the Koyamari point. From 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, a peaceful procession was held. Afterward, members of the murderous Awami League, with the help of the brutal police, attacked the students and the public. There was a clash between the two sides. News came that the autocratic Sheikh Hasina had resigned and fled the country, prompting people to celebrate with a victory procession. Hafiz Azizul Islam also joined the procession. Around 6:00 PM, while striking a digital signboard with a picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman using a stick, he was electrocuted. He hung from the electric wire for approximately 20 minutes. He was later rushed to the Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Teacher’s Reaction About the Martyr
The co-superintendent of Awliyarhat Kazi Nizamia Dakhil Madrasa said, "Hafiz Mohammad Azizul Islam enrolled in the 8th grade at this madrasa. He was a candidate for the Dakhil exam this year. In the past three years, he had never been involved in any disputes with his classmates or anyone else. No complaints had been filed against him in the office. His greatest quality was his participation in delivering religious sermons at various locations during the lecture season. He dreamt of becoming a good Islamic preacher. May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdaus."
Family’s Financial Condition
Azizul Islam's father, Mohammad Abdur Rahim, is a farmer by profession and supports his family through farming on his own land. He has two marriages. From his first marriage, he has three sons and two daughters, while his second marriage has produced one son (the martyr Azizul Islam) and one daughter. Among Azizul Islam's three brothers, Mohammad Jalal Uddin is a farmer, Mohammad Helal Uddin works as a stone laborer, and Mohammad Mizanul Islam is a 7th-grade student at Awliyarhat Kazi Nizamia Dakhil Madrasa.
