Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
On March 3, 2004, in the village of Hariharpur, in the 8th Union of Rahimanpur, Thakurgaon District, Mohammad Sahan Parvez was born. He was the worthy son of Mosammat Morteza Begum and the late Saif Uddin. He was a gifted student who graduated with honors from Makkubular Rahman Government College in Thakurgaon Sadar and cleared the HSC exams. He was also a very good athlete.
In July 2024, when the nationwide anti-discrimination movement began, Sahan actively participated in it. On August 5, 2024, after the defeat of the student resistance, the corrupt Hasina fled to India with her sister Sheikh Rehana, and the people took to the streets in a victory procession, with Sahan joining them. During the procession, as it passed in front of Sayeed Commissioner’s house on Thakurgaon Road, he was injured by Awami terrorists. He was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where he passed away at 12:00 AM on August 6, 2024.
Sahan's death left his family, relatives, and the entire nation in mourning. His martyrdom will inspire future generations of freedom fighters to continue their struggle. We pray for his soul to attain the highest status in the afterlife, and may Allah grant his family the strength to endure this difficult time. Ameen.
The Incident of Martyrdom
Shaheed Mohammad Sahan Parvez, a bright, energetic, and kind-hearted person, was loved dearly by his parents from a young age. He excelled in his studies and was well-liked by his teachers and peers. After completing his HSC, Sahan was preparing for his first year of undergraduate studies at Dhaka College.
The family's dream was that he would grow up, learn, and alleviate their suffering. However, with his death, everything came to an end.
Since coming to power, this government has built walls of division among the people, one of which was the discriminatory quota system in government jobs, a wall no one had the strength to break. Finally, in 2018, the student movement led to the abolition of the quota system. However, after the movement subsided, in 2024, the unelected government came back to power and reinstated the abolished quota system through the Supreme Court. This angered the student population, who began protesting again. Despite numerous ultimatums, the government showed no concern.
To crush the movement, the authoritarian Hasina regime implemented widespread repression. Eventually, the government resorted to killing students. The demand of the general students now narrowed to a single point. The government imposed a curfew and shut down the internet, plunging the entire country into darkness. Gunfire, tear gas, and mass killings continued. Eventually, the students broke curfew and took to the streets. Fearful of the people's anger, Hasina fled to India, leaving power behind. The date was August 5, 2024, "36th July."
At that time, celebrations and sweet foods spread across the country. In Thakurgaon, too, the people of the region took part in the victory procession against the tyranny. Sahan participated in the procession as well. As the procession reached Sayeed Commissioner’s house, he invited some of the protestors into his house, where a gas cylinder and petrol had been pre-arranged. As the protestors entered the room, Sayeed and his accomplices quickly retreated, setting fire to the room before leaving. The gas cylinder exploded, and Sahan and his companions were burned. The people rushed to rescue the students from the flames and took them to the hospital. On the way, one protestor died, and another passed away after reaching the hospital.
Sahan was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, but 90% of his body had been burned. After battling for his life, the brave warrior passed away at 12:00 AM on August 6, 2024. Allah took him into His embrace.
The brutality of his death sent shivers through the general public, and the local people have demanded the harshest punishment for those responsible.
Statements from Close Relatives and Friends
1. Sahan’s elder brother said, "Sahan was the only light of our family. His college results were excellent. We had dreams for him; we thought that one day he would grow up and support our struggling family. But now all those dreams are shattered. He used to say, 'I will go to Dhaka, do something, take care of the family, and get your eye treatment done.'"
2. A neighbor mentioned, "Sahan was great at studies and loved sports. We lost a talented and well-mannered boy from our community."
Family's Financial Situation
Sahan had completed his HSC and was waiting to be admitted to his first year at Dhaka College. He was the only breadwinner for his family.
His father worked at a sugar mill, but after his death, the responsibility of the family was taken on by Sahan’s ill elder brother, who had been suffering from an eye disease for a long time. He worked lifting sacks with a labor contractor, earning around 10,000 Taka per month. In addition, during his time working at the sugar mill, his father had borrowed 200,000 Taka to build their house, which remains unpaid. The house construction was left unfinished after his father’s death.
