Incident of Martyrdom
On August 4, 2024, at 3:00 PM, Noor Surjo participated in a mass procession organized by the anti-discrimination student movement. During the procession, the Awami League, Chhatra League, and administration launched a joint attack on the protesting students. Unable to withstand the assault, the protesters dispersed. In the ensuing chaos, many were injured or went missing. Surjo and another student, Fahim from Dinajpur, were captured and detained in the house of the municipal mayor, Zahid Hossain. Their whereabouts remained unknown to their families. As evening fell, their families began an extensive search, contacting the administration, fire service, and other authorities, but to no avail. The next day, it was revealed that Shaheed Surjo and Fahim had been confined in a room on the second floor of Zahid Hossain's house, where they were subjected to torture and martyred. The fire service informed their families of their deaths.
The following morning, without any autopsy, Shaheed Surjo's body was buried in the family Graveyard at his ancestral home. Witnesses later reported that after the former Prime Minister fled the country on August 5, enraged citizens attacked Zahid Hossain's house, setting it on fire. It is believed that Noor Surjo and Fahim were trapped inside when the fire spread, leading to their deaths.
However, on September 10, 2024, following a court order, Surjo's body was exhumed for autopsy. The Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate, Laila Yasmin, was present during the exhumation. The body was sent to the forensic department of M Abdur Rahim Medical College in Dinajpur for examination.
