Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Md. Selim Mondol was born on April 5, 1995. His father's name is Mr. Md. Wahab Mondol and his mother's name is Mosammat Rezia Khatun. His father was a tea shop owner. Selim Mondol was a carpenter. He lived with his family in Kumarkhali village, Char Jagannathpur police station, Kushtia district. The martyr's family consisted of his wife, Mosammat Shobha Khatun, and his 3-year-old daughter, Humayra Jannat.
Background of Martyrdom
The country's quota reform movement had reached its peak. Dhaka and the whole country were in turmoil. The Awami autocratic government, which had been illegally in power for a decade and a half, was carrying out inhumane torture on the protesting students. Instead of finding any solution to the justified movement for quota reform, they adopted a cruel policy to suppress it. The government's vigilante forces, namely Chhatra League and the police, used rubber bullets, shotgun pellets, baton charges, and the deadliest of all, live bullets to pierce the chests of the students. When the July 19th movement was completely out of the autocrat's control, they declared a curfew across the country. But the angry people were not willing to leave the streets. So, even though a curfew was declared, the movement was still going on in some places.
On July 20, during the quota reform movement, there was a chase and counter-chase between the police and the students on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. At one point, the police took shelter in the Shimrail Highway Police office on the 7th floor of the 10-story Habibullah Kachpuri Market building next to the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Shimrail Intersection. This angered some people, who set fire to the building. On the 3rd floor of the same building, Abdus Salam, a furniture mechanic at Dutch Bangla Bank, along with some other workers, were doing decoration work. Although many people got out, he and a few others could not. His cherished dreams were burned in that fire. His flower-like life, which was going on happily with his wife and daughter, ended there. He was burned to death. Little Humayra's call for "father" was also burned in those raging flames. The fire service recovered the body three days later. The family arranged for his burial in his village home in Kushtia.
