Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Md. Sabbir Islam Sakib was born on April 27, 2004, in Hijla, Bagerhat. His father was an army officer, and his mother was a homemaker. From a young age, Sabbir was a very bright student. As the only younger brother of three sisters, he was deeply loved by them. He received moral education from his sisters alongside his parents' discipline. He was known in the area as a devout Muslim, and everyone loved him. Due to his patriotism, religiousness, and polite nature, he was very popular among the local people. He was a 11th-grade student at Sher-e-Bangla Degree College, Chitalmari, Bagerhat. His dream was to grow up and achieve great things, doing something for his parents and sisters. But ultimately, the Almighty accepted him for the liberation of the entire nation. He embraced martyrdom on July 19, 2024, at six in the evening, after being shot by police during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Description of Martyrdom
Since he came of age, Martyr Sabbir had grown up witnessing the Awami misrule in Bangladesh. In this Bangladesh, apart from the Awami League and its allies, the rest of Bangladesh are second-class citizens. It had become a daily occurrence to see members of the security forces abduct anyone from the opposition parties or those with dissenting opinions at any time and on any pretext, to kill people in broad daylight through disappearances, murders, and crossfires, and for ordinary students to be beaten to death by the Chhatra League at universities after being labeled "anti-government." The news of the overnight killing of six opposition activists on the pretext of throwing bricks and stones at the motorcade of an Awami MP seemed to be the last paragraph of the 8th column of the last page of the newspaper.
For nearly a decade and a half, the government has severely suppressed various movements and protests that have arisen against the government's numerous injustices. Therefore, the government adopted the same method to suppress the movement of students and the general public that began last June demanding the reform of the discriminatory quota system in government jobs. Initially, the government used baton charges, tear gas, and sound grenades to subdue the protesters, but later it resorted to firing bullets directly at the protesters' chests, heads, and eyes. With the martyrdom of Shaheed Abu Sayeed on July 16, this procession of martyrs began, and later it crossed the thousand marks. Countless students and ordinary people were injured. The accurate count of people who were disabled and blinded is still unknown today.
His parents never wanted Sabbir to join the movement and participate in rallies and meetings. However, he thought, "I must join this movement." Sabbir was always against injustice and oppression. Since Sabbir could not join the movement in Bagerhat, he came to Dhaka from Bagerhat to join the rally with the students and the public. Leaving home, he first came to his sister's house in Tongi, Dhaka. From Tongi, he came to the BNS Center in Uttara on Friday, the 19th. As part of the nationwide student and public protest march, he took a position in front of the BNS Center in Sector 7.
He was at the forefront of the march. Being at the forefront of the march, Sabbir positioned himself face-to-face with the police. Meanwhile, the police started firing indiscriminately. The police bullets struck Md. Sabbir Islam Sakib with great force. Five bullets hit his body in quick succession. Two bullets hit his head, and the remaining three hit his chest. Instantly, Sabbir fell to the street covered in blood. Taking great risk, his companions rescued him from the scene and took him to Crescent Hospital in Uttara. But by then, he had embraced martyrdom. The police took the body that night. At around three o'clock at night, about 50 policemen came to his village home and buried the body.
Md. Sabbir Islam Sakib's parents are in deep grief over his death. Losing their son, his parents are now almost mad with grief. As the only beloved brother of his sisters, they are also overwhelmed with sorrow. The boy who wanted to support his family had the desire to grow up and remove all the hardships of his parents. Currently, the family has no significant income. His father is a former army member, and the limited pension money he receives is just enough to barely keep the family afloat.
