Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
"Where Will I Go Now with My Two Little Daughters?"
Md. Babu was born on November 29, 1993, in Tuzarbhanga, Daudkandi, Cumilla. He completed his primary education at the village Maktab. Later, he learned the craft of furniture-making and joined a shop as an artisan. In adulthood, he married Ms. Munni Akter, and together they were blessed with two daughters. Thus, their happy family life continued.
The Days of the Movement
General students had been protesting for reforms in the government job quota system. Instead of resolving their demands rationally, the fascist Awami League government deployed its brutal student wing, the Chhatra League, to suppress the movement. At the same time, the ruthless law enforcement agencies, acting on the orders of the authoritarian regime, cracked down on the students with severe force.
As part of this repression, on July 16, in Rangpur, Abu Sayeed, a student of the English Department at Begum Rokeya University, was brutally killed by police gunfire. That day, six people lost their lives nationwide. The student community across Bangladesh, including those fighting against discrimination, erupted in outrage. Gradually, the movement transformed into a one-point demand for the government's resignation.
To crush and eliminate the movement, the Awami League-backed notorious cadres and the oppressive Hasina-led law enforcement forces killed thousands of people in a brutal shooting spree. Eventually, on August 5, a mass uprising by students and the public led to the fall of the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina.
How He Became a Martyr
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic rule, victory processions erupted across the country. Similarly, in front of Daudkandi Police Station in Cumilla, a jubilant rally was organized by the protesting people on August 5. Suddenly, the barbaric police force opened indiscriminate fire on the crowd. A bullet struck Shaheed Babu, causing him to collapse on the spot.
Bystanders rushed him to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). However, on the way to DMCH, Babu took his last breath.
He left behind his two daughters—one just seven months old and the other seven years old. His widow is now forced to bear the lifelong pain of losing her husband to the gunfire of the oppressors. Babu was the sole breadwinner of his family, and his sudden death cast a shadow of grief over them. Having lost their only source of support, the martyr's family is now struggling in extreme hardship.

How His Family Is Coping
Babu worked in a furniture shop. Despite his modest income and financial struggles, he lived happily with his wife and two daughters. The martyr's father is an auto-rickshaw driver. Now, after the tragic loss of this patriotic hero, there is no one left to look after his family. His widow and innocent young daughters are enduring a life of extreme hardship, deprived of even the most basic necessities.
Heartbroken, Babu’s wife lamented:
"I have two little daughters. Where will I go now? Their education, their future—everything is in darkness. There is no man left in our home. Life has become unbearable with my children."
