Buried on the Land He Bought to Build a Home: The Martyrdom of Hafiz Md. Hasan
Martyr Md. Hasan (Hafiz Hasan)
Serial: 780
ID: Chattogram Division: 116
Martyr Profile
Md. Hasan was the only son of the late Mohammad Selim of Tumchar village, Chargazi Union, Ramgati Upazila, in Laxmipur District. After his father passed away ten years ago, Hasan, along with his mother Mahinur Begum and the rest of the family, took shelter at his maternal grandfather’s home in Char Jabbar Union, Subarnachar, Noakhali. It was from there that Hasan's journey of struggle began. A Hafiz of 25 paras of the Qur’an, Hasan studied up to Dakhil level, but the pressure of livelihood pushed him to start working at a workshop in Chattogram.
Even as he lived in his grandfather’s house, Hasan dreamed of owning a small piece of land and building a peaceful home. He eventually bought land and even began filling it in preparation for construction. He had also kept aside a portion of the land to build a small family graveyard. But none of these dreams would come true. The very land he prepared to build a house on remained empty, and instead, Hasan became the first to be buried in the graveyard he had envisioned—his was the first grave.
From Struggle to Sacrifice
Hasan lost his father at a young age and took refuge with his mother in a quiet village. He grew up as a fighter, not only dreaming of a home for his family but also harboring deep love for his country. It was this unwavering love that led him to join the anti-fascist July Uprising of 2024. There, he was shot in the head and would go on to fight for his life for nine long months, only to finally pass away in silence, leaving behind a grieving family and a nation in mourning.
At the time of the uprising, Hasan was a 10th-grade student at Halishahar Gharib-e-Newaz High School in Chattogram. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his studies, and he began working in a local workshop to support his family. As the only brother of two sisters and the main pillar of his household, Hasan worked tirelessly to ease his mother’s suffering. He took the reins of the family in his own hands—but ultimately laid down his life for a greater cause.
How He Was Martyred
On 5 August 2024, Hasan participated in the anti-fascist uprising in the Tigerpass area of Chattogram, alongside thousands of others. There, he was shot in the head by bullets fired by the police and a local Jubo League leader named Shamim. He was initially taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was moved to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka and later transferred abroad for advanced treatment—first to Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, and then to Phyathai Phahon Yothin Hospital.
Despite months of care, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday night, 22 May 2025, at 11:10 PM. On Sunday, 25 May, after his funeral prayer, Hasan was buried on the land he had once dreamed of building a home upon—his dream fulfilled, but not for life, only for eternal rest.
Family Testimony
Hasan’s relative Shamim Chowdhury said, “Hasan was the eldest son and carried the burden of the entire family. He dreamt of building his own home. Slowly, things were falling into place. He even left space for a family graveyard. Who could have known that he would be the first to be buried there? An orphaned boy who left us all in tears.”
Ariful Islam, Noakhali District Coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, stated, “On Saturday, 24 May 2025, thousands gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar for his funeral prayer. As per his mother Mahinur Begum’s wish, Hasan was buried on Sunday, 25 May, in Subarnachar, Noakhali. He was a brave and dedicated young man. His sacrifice will guide our path.”
Khondkar Istiak Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner of Noakhali, said, “The anti-discrimination movement has created a new space for national reflection and opened the door to new possibilities. Hasan was his family’s only support. His sacrifice in the struggle against tyranny will forever be remembered by the nation.”
Tributes on Social Media
Umama Fatema, one of the July Movement coordinators, wrote on Facebook:
“Hasan Bhai, one of the wounded warriors of the July uprising, has just been martyred. Koli Apa was constantly in touch with him through 'Empowering Our Fighters.' A few days ago, she told me his condition had worsened. I thought I’d visit him when I return to the country. But now… Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un. The lives of the wounded and martyred families have come to a standstill. We go on, but do we really live? July is something we carry on our shoulders. Do the martyr’s coffins make our burdens heavier? Everything else seems to go on—but does it really?”
On 22 May 2025 at 11:21 PM, the "Empowering Our Fighters" Facebook page confirmed his death, stating:
“Our brother Hasan, one of the injured warriors of the July Uprising, has just been martyred while undergoing treatment in Thailand. Please keep him in your prayers. The news was confirmed by his younger sister, Sumaiya. He had been under treatment for seven months in Thailand. On 10 April 2025, Hasan was taken off life support and placed in a general bed. After his condition worsened again on 25 April, he was placed back on life support.”
The post further detailed:
“Hasan was shot on the right side of his head during the uprising at Tigerpass on 5 August. The injury likely caused brain damage. He was on life support with a feeding tube and breathing support. The infection spread to his brain, and as his condition worsened, he was rushed to CMH Dhaka.”
Recommendations for the State
1. Provide a permanent housing grant for the martyr’s family.
2. Offer a monthly allowance of at least BDT 15,000.
3. Ensure sustainable employment for Hasan’s mother (e.g., poultry farming, dairy cow rearing).
