Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

"There is only one destination.
Either the country's supply of shrouds will run out, or the sweet shops will be empty."
College student Jihad Hasan Mahim joined the quota reform movement. When the movement turned into a one-point agenda, continuous violence and conflict were going on in the Jatrabari area. Out of fear, Mahim's mother, Kohinur Begum, forbade her son from going to the movement again. Mahim said, "Mother, I will go to the movement for just one more day." On August 5, he went to the movement hiding from his mother. After that, he could not return home; Mahim's bullet-riddled body returned. On August 5, Jihad Hasan was killed by police bullets in Jatrabari, the capital. Mohammad Alam Mia, the father of the student Mahim who lost his life in the anti-discrimination student-public movement, is carrying the grief of his son. However, he feels proud of his son's great sacrifice for the country.
Grief at the Home of Shaheed Jihad Hasan Mahim
At their home in Shonir Akhra, under Jatrabari Police Station, a scene of overwhelming grief unfolds. His parents, holding onto his books, notebooks, and sports equipment, seem to be trying to feel their son's presence one last time. Breaking down in tears, his father, Mohammad Alam Mia, says,
"On July 19, he was injured by pellet gunfire during the protests. I told him, 'If something happens to you, what will become of us?' He replied, 'And if we just sit at home, what will become of you? The country needs to be cleansed, and that won’t happen if we stay indoors.' I told him, 'Then you won’t go alone. Your younger brother and I will go with you.'"
Alam continues, "I am a low-income employee. Despite hardships, I did everything I could to fulfill my son's dreams. Losing him has plunged me into complete darkness."
Jihad Hasan Mahim was only 18 years old, a first-year student at Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College in the capital. His mother, Kohinur Begum, sobs uncontrollably,
"Everyone said that August 5 would be even more dangerous. The day before, I begged him not to go to the protest. I was terrified. My son reassured me, 'Just one more day, mother.' That morning, I kept telling him not to go. He was at home. He even asked me to boil some eggs. But perhaps, so that I wouldn’t suspect his plans, he left home without his mobile phone and without eating breakfast. By afternoon, I heard the sounds of celebration on the streets. Since he had left his phone at home, I couldn’t contact him. I assumed he was out with his friends, celebrating. I never imagined he would never return."
The Final Moments of Shaheed Jihad Hasan
Jihad’s brother-in-law, Tanvir Ahmed Himu, reports that a few young men—Shanto, Noman, and Monir—rushed the bullet-injured Jihad to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) near Jatrabari Police Station. When his death was confirmed, they chose not to request an autopsy. They took his body to Dania Jame Mosque, where, at first, his identity was unknown. Later, a photo of his body was posted on Facebook at around 10 PM, asking if anyone could recognize him. Eventually, someone did and informed Jihad’s family.
His elder sister, Afrin Binte Alam Mim, a third-year management student at Begum Badrunnesa Government Women's College, describes him with pride and sorrow,
"My brother had a heart of gold. He wanted to serve society. He was honest and highly intelligent. He chose to study business because he dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur rather than an employee. He told his friends, ‘My father is getting old. I won’t let him work much longer. I need to start something soon.’"
A Revolutionary Spirit from the Beginning
Jihad was from Sundalpur Union, Daudkandi Upazila, Cumilla. He was laid to rest beside his grandfather’s grave. His family is both heartbroken and proud of him. Among three siblings, he was the second. His younger brother, Tahmim Hasan, is in 8th grade at Barnomala Ideal School in Jatrabari.
His father, Mohammad Alam, says,
"Jihad was vocal in the quota reform movement from the beginning. He actively participated in every event of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Just two days before his death, he posted on Facebook: ‘There is only one destination. Either the country will run out of burial shrouds, or the sweet shops will run out of sweets.’"
He laments, "I named my son Jihad out of love. Who knew he would become a revolutionary and give his life for people’s rights? I always prayed for the young children who died in the movement, but I never imagined my son would be among them. Our children have shed their blood. Now, all we ask for is a just and beautiful country."
The Last Day: How Shaheed Jihad Fell
Jihad Hasan, an 11th-grade student at Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College, was a dedicated activist of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. When the quota reform movement escalated into a one-point demand for Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, Jatrabari remained a hotspot of conflict and violence.
On August 5, Jihad told his mother he would go to the protest "just one more day." He left home without her knowing, leaving behind his mobile phone and skipping breakfast.
At around 11:30 AM, as students and protesters broke curfew and marched toward Shahbagh, Sheikh Hasina’s brutal police force opened fire directly at them. A bullet struck Jihad in the forehead, killing him instantly.
The Final Goodbye
On August 6, Jihad, the young revolutionary, was buried next to his grandfather in their village home in Dhakargaon. Before the burial, his janaza (funeral prayer) was held there.
His dream was to fight for justice. In the end, he gave his life for it.
