Daily Ittefaq Report: The boy withered before he turned 15
"If he had lived, the boy would have turned 15 on September 11. But the boy withered before that," said Syed Md. Gaziur Rahman, father of Syed Muntasir Rahman Alif, who was martyred in the student-public movement on August 5.
He said, "I sent my only son to a madrasa when he was young to make him a Hafiz. He could not become a Hafiz of the Qur'an, but he passed Dakhil (SSC) with an A+ from the madrasa. After the Alim first year exams, I said, 'Let's go visit our village home in Nangalkot,' but the boy said, 'Father, enroll me in coaching to learn computer and English language.'
According to my son's words, I enrolled him in both subjects by spending Tk 10,000. From that coaching, friends started going to the movement together. When Abu Sayeed and many others were shot and killed in Rangpur on July 16, my son secretly went to the movement, we did not know. When we found out that my son was going to the movement, I was very worried. So many children are being injured and killed, I have only one son, 'what if something happens to him'! Out of that fear, I forbade him to go to the movement.
But Alif had one thing to say - 'I will go to the movement even if I die. Elder brothers are losing their lives, I will not sit at home'."
Alif last went to the movement on August 5. On that day, I locked my son in the house. But even then, the end could not be saved. When Alif went to the movement on August 5, after noon, I learned that Sheikh Hasina had left the country. But even though it was evening, Alif was not coming home, I called a couple of his friends and asked about Alif. Friends said, 'Uncle, don't worry, many people have gone to Shahbagh and Ganobhaban today, maybe Alif has gone there too.' But I said, all the roads are closed, how will he go to Shahbagh?
Then in the evening, announcements were being made from various mosques. where the bodies had been fallen here and there. It was also announced like that the body of a boy of so many years has been found.'
Listening to those announcements, I went to two places, but it was not my son. Then I went to the local hospital, they said, those who are seriously injured, we are sending them to Dhaka Medical, you can inquire there. I left with his friends towards Dhaka Medical at around 10 pm. But that night there were barricades and gunfire on the way, then the Jatrabari police station was looted, the roads were in a terrible condition. When we reached Dhaka Medical, it was about 12 o'clock at night.
Father Gaziur says, I have a cousin brother at Dhaka Medical. I called him. That day, from the gate of Dhaka Medical to the emergency, it was blood and blood. In front of the morgue, countless bodies were piled up in a room. Standing on the floor of that room, my feet were submerged in blood. Among them, I suddenly saw a hand, inside the pile of corpses. Black T-shirt on the body. I told the people in charge of that room to show the body, but they said, we will show it if you confirm, otherwise it cannot be shown. So many corpses cannot be turned upside down. I looked for a while longer and was sure that this would be my son's body. Seeing his well-built arms and white pajamas and black T-shirt, which my son used to wear at home, I said, 'I am sure.' Please show me the face.
They say, shot in the head, then they take out my son's body. But there was no number or anything else on the body. They say, the body cannot be handed over without an autopsy. But after my cousin said, they gave my son's body. The ambulance driver said, 'Such a blood-soaked corpse, take it away after washing it, otherwise many people will not want to bathe it.' Then I took my son's body to Quantum in Segunbagicha. They bathed him, dressed him and asked for a 'death certificate.' They will not hand over the body without a death certificate. Then after explaining the matter to them, I brought my son's body with a bond. When I reached Jatrabari's house, it was 4 o'clock in the morning. There, taking Alif's mother with us, we went to our village home in Comilla's Nangalkot in the morning. After the Johr prayers, we buried our son in the family graveyard.
