Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Azad Sarkar was a respected person from Toragarh village in Hajiganj Municipality of Chandpur district. He was able to achieve the status of a martyr at the end of his life. Azad Sarkar was the son of the late Anu Mia Sarkar and the late Shahina Rani of this village. Just as he saw the independence of Bangladesh very closely in his childhood, he was able to leave his memories in the second independence of that Bangladesh in 2024. He used to do social work in his own village. Throughout his life, he tried to help people by spending money from his own pocket.
He was less educated in the traditional way. Before his martyrdom, Shaheed Azad lived together with his 7-member family in his own house. His eldest son Rajib Sarkar is a contractor. The middle son Mostafa Ahmed and the third son Ahmed Kabir Himel work as day laborers. The youngest son Ahmed Kabir Samir is still a student. The martyr's family lived a fairly comfortable life.
Background of Martyrdom
Have you seen a demon?
Haven't seen it?
You have seen it, maybe you haven't noticed.
How many human-like demons are beating and killing a living person.
They are reveling in diabolical joy. Haven't seen it?
There can be no greater identity for a human being than being a human being. A person can have his own philosophy. Whether it is right or wrong is a separate matter. Even a dangerous killer gets shelter of the law. If he is not satisfied with the verdict of the lower court, he gets the opportunity to appeal in the higher court. If he is sick, the government takes the responsibility of his treatment. But if there is a slight disagreement, if you have different opinions, these demons beat and kill the dissident person whenever they get the chance.
From the beginning to the end of this uprising of students and the public in 2024, there has been a brutal massacre all over Bangladesh. Despite indiscriminately injuring and killing people, people from all walks of life have helped to keep this movement alive from their respective places. Azad Sarkar has shown one such example. Despite being an old man himself, he was brutally injured when he went to give water to the agitating students on August 4, 2024. Two of his neighbors, Mithu Kazi and Tushar Kazi, kept chopping Azad Sarkar with cleavers. At one point, when the people of the area took him to Comilla Medical, Azad Sarkar died the next day on August 5. Shaheed Azad could not even imagine that his sons would kill him by chopping him like this! This is how he will be helplessly injured and fall into the lap of death at the hands of his neighbors!
Grieving locals
No one can believe that everyone's beloved Azad Sarkar will be brutally tortured, oppressed, and injured by his neighbors and martyred in this way. The killers were like his sons, despite walking and sitting together, it was not even in the imagination of the locals that he would be killed in such a tragic way at the end of his life just because of the slavery of the dictator. He always used to help people by standing by their side. The locals are deeply saddened by his loss.
Neighbor Sheikh Farid Majumdar said, "Azad Sarkar was a very popular person. He used to help in various social works whenever he got the chance. Everyone in the area respected him. Azad Sarkar used to help people by spending money from his own pocket. He never got involved in quarrels with anyone. If you ask anyone in the village, they will say in one sentence - 'Above all, he was a good man'."
