Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Jewel, age 34, worked as a technician. Nilufa Begum is his mother's name, while Sirajul Islam is his father. He rented a home in Demra, Dhaka, where he resided with his spouse and kids. The passage offers insight into Md. Jewel's sociopolitical environment and how it influenced his decision to become a martyr. It depicts a world where people's voices are silenced, basic rights are denied, and economic misery is pervasive. The passage serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary individuals like Md. Jewel in the fight for justice and equality.
How He Became a Martyr
From 2008 to 2024, Jewel did not get a chance to vote even once. Young people like him are deprived of the right to speak. Protesters have been subjected to detention, disappearances, imprisonment, and torture for posting a single status on Facebook to demand their rights. Discrimination everywhere. Inefficient people are becoming sharers of power by flattery. The skilled have to flee the country. A silent famine has befallen the people as a result of looting and money laundering. Jewel is an ordinary technician. He has a sick father at home. Both parents are ill.
Explanation of the Context
This passage highlights the frustration and helplessness of Md. Jewel, who, despite being a common citizen, did not have the opportunity to exercise his basic right to vote for a long period of time. It also sheds light on the broader issue of suppression of free speech and discrimination prevalent in the society, which compelled many skilled individuals to leave the country. The passage further mentions the economic hardship faced by the common people due to looting and money laundering, which has resulted in a silent famine. The mention of Jewel's sick parents underscores his personal struggles and the challenges he faced in his daily life.
His sick father is at home. Both parents are ill. He has to work day and night to cover their medical expenses, provide two meals a day for the family, take care of relatives, and so on. Even after that, Jewel sometimes gets stuck due to the extortion of various wings of the Awami League, mismanagement everywhere, corruption and rising commodity prices. Despite wanting to protest against the mismanagement everywhere, he remains silent. And waits for the opportunity. When the anti-quota movement started in 2024, Jewel thought this was the opportunity to stand up against discrimination everywhere. If he doesn't stand up at this time, his children will have to suffer in the days to come. They will have to be enslaved by the autocratic, murderous, illegal government.
From these thoughts, Jewel participated in the anti-autocratic government movement. He used to join the anti-discrimination rallies every day. August 4 was a very important day. The students and the public have understood how to resist the killer forces. On this day, protests took place across the country. In the protests, the students resisted with pieces of brick against the modern weapons. In different places, some Awami policemen were killed by the students and the public. 130 people were martyred from among the students and the public. Thousands were injured. Jewel was one of these 130 people. He bravely faced the Awami goons on the streets all day. The government terrorists realized that their victory was positive if they could eliminate Jewel. Although they did not think that if one Jewel departs, thousands of Jewels will come forward to shake the streets. On August 4, at 6.18 pm, he was shot in the chest in the Jatrabari area. The students and the public were enraged. Police and Jubo League goons were forced to take shelter in various places due to the brickbats. In such a situation, the injured Jewel was taken to Dhaka Medical by rickshaw. There he could only say a few words. His name and who to inform, that's all. Then he fainted and died at 7 pm. Before his death, he was able to tell his name and address, so he was quickly identified. The next day, after the janaja, he was buried in the Dogair graveyard.
The bravery of the students and the public on August 4 shook the autocratic government. The calculations started to change from the night. Seeing the Facebook profiles of the protesters turning red, the killers started to think that their downfall could happen at any time. They stay awake all night looking for a way out. The illegal government was terrified by the announcement of the long march towards Dhaka from among the students.
How is his family?
The martyr's father, Sirajul Islam (63), is ill. He has had a ring placed in his heart. Mother Nilufa Begum is a housewife. Sister Sharmin Sultana works in a hospital. The younger brother is studying in the 3rd year of honors. The martyr's wife's name is Sumaiya Akhter Subarna. His children are Abdullah, 1 year old, and Sidratul Muntaha, 3 and a half years old. Muntaha is looking for her father. Thinks he will definitely come home in the evening. Runs to the door at the slightest sound. But the father does not come. Except for the only sister, there is currently no income in his family.
Relative's statement
Sister Sharmin Sultana says, "He was lively and cheerful. He was gentle and sociable in his conduct. He was very skilled in technician work. He was caring towards his father and mother."
