Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Shaheed Md. Tuhin Ahmed was born on January 21, 1993, on the sacred grounds of Sonarampur village in Bancharampur Upazila of Brahmanbaria. He was an intrepid participant in the '24 anti-autocracy movement. He was raised in utter simplicity, surrounded by the affection of his mother and glimpses of his father's devotion. While his father, Chaghir Ahmed, was a diligent small businessman, his mother, Tahmina Begum, was the light of the family as a dedicated homemaker. Being the eldest among two brothers and a sister, Tuhin perfectly embodied the family's hardships and sense of obligation.
While his educational background was limited to the eighth grade, it never became an obstacle to his intellect or his fighting spirit. Although family obligations took him away from school, he stood with boundless courage in the arena of life's struggles. He worked as a tile mason in a construction company, yet deep within his heart resided sky-high dreams and a firm resolve to sacrifice his life for freedom. He has a four-year-old son, whose childhood is passing without a father's affection, but he will one day grow up in the shadow of his father's glorious self-sacrifice.
Economic Condition
Shaheed Md. Tuhin Ahmed was a member of a poor family, whose life was full of struggles. His father once worked in Malaysia. But now he lives in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, where he was once involved in a small business. However, he currently does no work. As a result, the family's economic condition has become even more precarious. Tuhin has only a small homestead land in his village and a small tin house on it, with no other permanent assets.
The family is trying to survive on this homestead land. But that is not enough security. Shaheed Tuhin Ahmed was a married man and has a four-year-old child. This child, amidst the absence of his father, is now staring into the darkness of the future. The death of Tuhin Ahmed is not only the loss of a loved one for his family, but it has completely shattered their economic and social condition. They are struggling to survive, and every day of their lives seems to be the beginning of a new war.
How He Became a Martyr
July 20, 2024. This was a shameful chapter in the history of Bangladesh. On this day, the autocratic government stained its hands with the blood of the common people. The 2024 quota movement was a long-awaited struggle of the student community for justice, which gradually took the form of a national movement. The main objective of this movement was transparency in job recruitment and a non-discriminatory quota reform. But the ruling Hasina government displayed a cruelty in suppressing this movement, which will forever be written in black letters in history. Since coming to power, the autocratic Hasina government has started one anti-democratic act after another. The culture of impunity, the arrest and disappearance of opposition leaders and activists, strict control over the media, and the conspiracy to break the dreams of the young generation—these were the regular misdeeds of her rule.
During the 2024 quota reform movement, her government took the heinous path of suppressing public opinion by shutting down the internet. On that day, Md. Tuhin Ahmed was present in the Jatrabari procession, he participated in the movement for the realization of his rights as usual. But the environment that day was different. The police and RAB, failing to suppress the movement, opened fire on the students and the public. Hasina's autocratic forces fired from helicopters from the sky as well as ground operations that day. A RAB bullet fired from the sky hit Md. Tuhin's body. And his bloody body fell to the ground. Tuhin was quickly taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. But due to the lack of confidence in the treatment system there, his comrades took him to Enam Medical College. Although surgery was performed there, Tuhin's physical condition gradually deteriorated. Finally, after two days, he passed away in the ICU.
The death of Md. Tuhin is not just a personal grief, it was an attempt to kill the dream of a nation. The 2024 quota movement, which was built on the demand for justice and equality, was brutally suppressed. This cruelty of the Hasina government is nothing new. Her regime has a long history of human rights violations and suppression of dissent. She has repeatedly tried to silence the voice of the people by abusing power. When the young people of the quota movement took to the streets demanding justice, they were subjected to such torture, which reveals the barbaric form of the government not only to the country but to the whole world.
The sacrifice of Md. Tuhin Ahmed has filled the pages of history today. He gave his life not only for himself, but for the young generation of the whole of Bangladesh, who want a fair, equitable society. In exchange for his blood, there remains a pledge to establish a fair and just social system for the future generation of Bangladesh.
Martyr Md. Tuhin: A Victim of Brutality
The events following the martyrdom of Md. Tuhin reflect extreme cruelty and the height of barbarism. While his grieving family and the local community were preparing to bid him a final farewell, the government-backed forces and party cadres deprived them of this fundamental right. Friends, relatives, and even neighbors were denied the opportunity to catch a last glimpse of Tuhin’s body.
It is both natural and humane for a person to be laid to rest in their birthplace. However, even this right was stripped away from Tuhin. Such actions are not only proof of sheer brutality but also a grave insult to humanity. Being forced to bury him at his maternal grandfather’s home instead of his own locality was an act of heartlessness and profound sorrow—an outright violation of human rights and justice.
Statement from a Close Relative of the Martyr
Shaheed Tuhin Ahmed was an exceptional individual. Always cheerful, sociable, and dedicated to bringing joy to those around him, he never engaged in conflicts with anyone. His polite and calm demeanor made him beloved in the community. Despite his young age, he was a courageous youth who never hesitated to stand against injustice. He actively participated in movements every day, driven by his commitment to resisting wrongdoing in society.
Yet today, he is no longer among us. It is incredibly difficult to accept that such an honest, brave, and kind-hearted young man had to lose his life in such a manner. Tuhin’s death is not only an irreparable loss for his family but for all of us. The cruel and untimely end of such a young life fills our hearts with deep sorrow.
