Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
Shabbir Hossain's life was simple and straightforward, but full of enthusiasm. Born on January 3, 2005, in the Bhawaniganj Sharifpur area of Sadar Upazila, Lakshmipur District, Shabbir grew up in a rural environment. His father, Amir Hossain, is a day laborer who, even at the age of 58, works hard for his family. His mother, Maya Begum, is a housewife who always manages the household chores and bears the burden of the family.
Shabbir was extremely talented from childhood. He studied at the local primary and high school and was admitted to the Dalal Bazar Degree College in the twelfth grade for higher education. His dream was to finish his studies and help his family financially, especially to alleviate the suffering of his parents. But all his dreams came to a tragic end; he had to sacrifice himself for speaking out about his rights against the autocratic Hasina. As a result, the oppressor's bullet took his life. Shabbir's simple nature, enthusiasm, and the happy dreams of his newly married life were all shattered. His wife, Tanva Akter, and young child now face a dark future; their lives seem devastated in Shabbir's absence.
Feelings about the Martyr
A neighbor of Martyr Shabbir Hossain said, "Shabbir was truly a good-hearted person. I knew him from childhood—his sweet nature, polite behavior, and respect for everyone made him special. No one in the area ever complained about him; rather, everyone loved and respected him."
The entire area seems stunned by the news of his tragic death. Those who once saw him laughing and playing are now shedding tears. The locals are deeply saddened by Shabbir's departure, as if they have lost a member of their own family. The passing of such a simple, honest, and courageous young man has left a deep mark of pain in our hearts.
Economic Condition
The family of Shaheed Shabbir Hossain, who was killed in the quota movement, is currently going through extreme economic hardship. The martyr's father, who is now 58 years old, is bent over with age but still has to work as a day laborer to support the family. The family has been suffering from financial difficulties for a long time, but the income of their only son, Shabbir, was some hope for them. Their dream of living and building a future was centered around Shabbir.
However, that dream was brutally shattered in the terrorist attack. After Shabbir's death, his family has completely broken down, especially his wife, Tanva Akter, who is only 18 years old. Tanva and their young son are now facing extreme economic hardship. Having lost their only breadwinner, the family is currently completely helpless.
How He Drank the Nectar of Martyrdom
August 4, the day of the anti-discrimination movement, was the last day of Shabbir Hossain's life, but his story of courage is still alive and eternal. When the whole country is in the field with the one-point demand for Hasina's downfall, the general public is working shoulder to shoulder for her downfall. Lakshmipur, the stronghold of protests in the southern region, is no exception. Thousands of students and people gathered in the Madam Bridge-Jhumur area of Lakshmipur against injustice. But that peaceful protest was shrouded in darkness when Awami League terrorists, Jubo League, and Chhatra League activists pounced on innocent students. Cut rifles and deadly weapons were their main tools. In contrast, the general student public had bricks, stones, and ordinary bamboo sticks. This was the only means of self-defense against the state and ruling party cadres. In that protest procession, Shabbir was at the forefront, standing as a symbol of courage.
Suddenly, the sound of gunfire, then smoke. The sharp bullet pierced Shabbir's chest and wounded him. He fell to the ground after being shot. The green grass turned red with blood. But this was not the end—the oppressors did not stop there. With sticks in their hands, they beat Shabbir's lifeless body, ensuring his death. His lifeless body was not shaking then, his breaths were also stopped. Then the terrorists fled from there, but Shabbir's silent protest remained permanent on that ground. This is reminiscent of the days of Jahiliyyah (ignorance). He was buried in the city's bus terminal area without any autopsy. As if his death and justice were a forgotten story in this country. Shabbir, who was a symbol of the movement, was present in the protest every day, the last chapter of his life was written in letters of blood. That brave young man, who never backed down, was always vocal against injustice, his mournful death shakes the conscience of the nation.
