Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
“The day you arrived in this world; you cried while everyone laughed. Build your life in such a way, that when you die, you will laugh, and the world will weep.â€
Martyr Introduction
A newborn was born on November 23, 2003, in Uttar Jaylaskar village of Daganbhuiyan, Feni district, illuminating the faces of his parents. As the first child and a son, his expatriate father was overjoyed and named him Sarwar Jahan Masud. His father, Md. Shah Jahan Tipu, has been working in the United Arab Emirates for a long time, and his loving mother, Bibi Kulsum Jahan, lovingly nurtured her three children. They are all quite attentive to their studies. Their days were going happily with the money sent by their father from abroad. The eldest son, Masud, was studying for his degree at Feni Government College. He was a very polite and helpful boy. He would rush to help everyone in the village in times of trouble. Moreover, Masud was very religious and prayed regularly.
How He Became a Martyr
Throughout July '24, the entire country was turbulent with the anti-discrimination student movement. And Sarwar Jahan Masud was vocal from the very beginning of this movement. He did not sit indifferently by but helped in various ways from the start of the movement. He thought that the government should take a logical decision through this quota reform, making the path for meritorious students to get jobs easier. He also wanted to become a big government officer after completing his studies so that he could serve the people of the country. Later, when this movement moved towards the fall of the government, Masud became even more actively involved in the movement to save the people of the country from the autocratic government.
Following this path, he left home around 10 am on August 4, 2024, on his bike to participate in the movement. Around 12:30 pm, he was with the surging crowd under the Mohipal flyover with his bike. Suddenly, around 1:45 pm, the Chhatra League terrorists started firing at the protesting students and the public who were positioned towards the Star Line bus counter. Masud then tried to move away from that place on his bike. Later, around 1:50 pm, on his way back, Masud came under fire from the terrorists on Circuit House Road. A deadly bullet pierced his chest. Writhing in pain, Masud collapsed to the ground. While some of the publics nearby were taking the injured Masud to the hospital, he succumbed to death, answering the call of the Almighty Allah. Sarwar Jahan Masud was martyred, another fresh life was lost. Another parent's lap was emptied.
Overall, the student public had called for a non-cooperation movement from August 4, and that afternoon it was announced that there would be a "Long March to Dhaka" the next day. As a result, the Sheikh Hasina government fell on August 5. Through this, the country was freed from autocracy. But Shaheed Sarwar Jahan Masud could not enjoy the joy of the liberation of that free country.
For him, perhaps the poet wrote -
"On the path of dawn, I hear whose voice
There is no fear, O there is no fear
He who will give his life completely
There is no decay, there is no decay."
How is Shaheed Masud's Family?
Masud's loving mother and his father are almost insane after losing their eldest child. Because it was from him that the first "father-mother" call was heard. His two younger brothers are grief-stricken. Throughout the courtyard of the house, they see Masud's memories. As his father lives abroad, Masud's family is financially well off. But they are distraught with Masud's grief. The neighbors are saddened by the loss of their friend who stood by them in times of trouble. A promising, innocent life was lost before it even began. That is why the English poet may have written, "Many a rose is born to blush unseen."
Feelings of Neighbors and Relatives
People become immortal in this world because of their deeds. Even after a person is gone, their deeds remain. Similarly, even after his death, Shaheed Sarwar Jahan Masud is immortal. His praises are still on the lips of the locals. Sheikh Newaz, one of his neighbors, said about Shaheed Masud, "He was very humane, polite, and humble. As the eldest child in the family, he was very responsible. He liked to mingle with everyone."
His cousin said, "Masud was a prayerful and extremely polite and gentle boy."
When asked about Masud, his cousin further said, "He had immense humanity within him. He considered the danger of others as his own and rushed to help everyone."
All in all, perhaps great-hearted people are like this, time makes them immortal. Similarly, great people like Shaheed Sarwar Jahan Masud come to this earth for a short time but leave behind long footprints. The nation will remember his contribution at the critical moment of the country forever.
May Allah accept his martyrdom and grant him a high place in Paradise (Amen).
