Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Shahid Belal Hossain, a 26-year-old youth, stood holding a placard that read "Step Down Hasina." Despite being forced to leave his studies due to poverty, he possessed a strong thirst for knowledge. The protest against injustice was evident in his eyes. A bullet from the Chhatra League extinguished his life forever.
Shahid Belal was born on February 17, 1998, in Hajipur village, Begumganj Thana, Noakhali District. He was the eldest of three children of the late Kabir Hossain and Jesmin Akter.
Family's Financial Condition
Shahid Belal Hossain supported his widowed mother and two sisters, a family of four. After passing Higher Secondary Certificate from Mirpur Government Bangla College, he left his studies due to financial hardship and took a job as a lift operator at Musafir Tower in Kakrail. He was the sole breadwinner of the family. His younger sisters' education and family expenses were covered by his income.
How He Became a Martyr
Violence spread across the country throughout July surrounding the anti-discrimination student movement. The Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, attacked students and protesters. On August 4th, Shahid Belal participated in a rally in the Bangla Motor area of the capital. He had been participating in the movement every day, defying his mother's নিষেধ.
While he was in the rally, a bullet fired by the Chhatra League from a nearby multi-story building shattered a part of Belal's neck. He was taken to BIRDEM Hospital with great difficulty by the people present and his friends, where doctors declared him dead. Although he was taken to Dhaka Medical College, he could not be saved there either. His spinal cord was severed by the bullet, paralyzing most of his body. As no hospital would admit him, he remained under nominal treatment at Dhaka Medical College and died on August 8th at 11 am.
Mother's Feelings
The martyr's mother says, "What was my son's fault? He was working for the country. Why was he killed? I want justice for this."
